The Rangers should sue Bud Selig for gross stupidity.

If the Rangers end up losing the World Series tonight, they can thank Selig.  It was his inane idea to tie the home field advantage in the series to the winner of the all-star game.  If they had home field advantage like they would have had under the old system, the series would likely be over and they would be celebrating a title.

But like a lot in baseball, the home field has been “Seliged.”

Definition – (1) To screw up something that without intervention would have been much better.

(2) To do things just for the sake of change despite the lack of need for any alternation.

(3) Just being stupid.

It would be bad enough if the Cards were a division winner and got home field with a worse record than the Rangers.  But this team fell backwards across the line into the playoffs as a wild card team.
In no other sport does something as stupid as an exhibition game determine home field advantage.  What would baseball have done if the 2011 game had ended in a tie like it did several years ago?  Knowing Bud, they would have had the first 4.5 innings in St. Lewis … Read more at FryingPanSports

Texas A&M Women NCAA Basketball

Texas A&M beat Notre Dame 76-70 in the women’s NCAA Championship game. For fans of the game it was one of the years most exciting, riveting, games of the season.

Watching the game it is hard to believe that just 50 short years ago Texas A&M did not even allow women to attend school. They were among the last schools to fully integrate classes and go co-ed. The women’s basketball players this week laid to rest any lingering doubts (were there any?) that this might have not have been a good thing. Compared with the men’s NCAA Championship game played just a day earlier the women’s game was near non-stop action. The two teams, each sporting a can-do attitude and undying belief they were the rightful champions this year, fought tooth and nail to outdo the other. They exchange baskets, taunts and amazing comebacks throughout the game.

Texas A&M star player Danielle Adams scored 30 points, 22 of them in the second half to put her team head and shoulders above the Irish. Adams is the Aggie’s All-American. She was a junior college transfer who underwent a near complete physical transformation to become the superstar we all saw on the … Read more at FryingPanSports

At least we can be thankful that the polls don’t determine the college basketball champion.

BCS Every Game Counts

The people that voted a 3 loss Texas team #2 over the previously unanimous #1 Ohio State team should lose their votes and be banished to watching the Golf Channel and listening to karaoke for eternity.

I don’t really have a problem with moving a 1 loss Kansas team over OSU despite the fact that they are not nearly as good a team as the Bucks. Kansas proved that by promptly losing to unranked 9 loss Kansas State. K State won for only the 2nd time since Moses was a young boy.

But what were the voters thinking by putting a 3 loss Texas team #2? Maybe the question should be are the voters capable of thought?

Texas lost at home to #4 Pitt then to an unranked USC on their floor. On Jan. 8th they lost at home again to #9 UConn. My question is this. How would you feel if like the joke of a “system” like the BcS decided the NCAA Basketball Champion?

The champion will be decided on the field just like every national college championship for every sport except BcS division football. But it will be interesting to see how the pin head voters pick … Read more at FryingPanSports

Will this week be full of upsets in football?

football

College games:

Louisiana Tech 20 @ #3 Boise St 49 – Boise looked just OK against a very out manned LTk team. The play of LTk did not do Boise any good convincing the pollsters or the computers they deserve to be higher.

#1 Auburn @ Mississippi – The Tigers shouldn’t have any trouble with Ole Miss but they probably will struggle early. Auburn plays great against really good teams but tends to play down to the level of the lesser SEC opponents. Auburn wins.

#2 Oregon @ USC – The Ducks looked really good against an up and down UCLA team. But this is USC and it is the closest thing the Trojans will get to a bowl game this year. The key will be how does USC handle a fast and nasty Duck D? The Oregon D holds its own but the USC D is not nearly what it has been in previous years. Oregon passes the test and wins.

#5 Michigan State @ #18 Iowa – The Hawkeyes looked like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football after the 1 point loss home against Wisconsin. The loss took them to the back of the Big 10 1 … Read more at FryingPanSports

The BcS Rankings get spun again.

football

Last week I was 2-2 in college picks which puts the total at 12-6.

In the pro picks I went 1-2 bringing the total to 9-5.

The BcS ratings – The Sooners are on top of the heap this week. But next week they go to #11 Missouri who is also undefeated. Beyond that they have one other top 25 team on the schedule in #14 Oklahoma St. Oregon is 2nd and faces a tricky game at home against UCLA (just ask Texas how tricky) then goes to USC. They end the season against #18 Arizona before going to play formerly ranked Oregon State.

#1 Ohio State @ #18 Wisconsin – The Bucks were not ready to play the game at the kickoff. It is the responsibility of the coaching staff to get them ready. Each of their losses in the Big 10 regular season over the last couple of years have come on the road when the Bucks looked disinterested in the game. By the second half they decided that it was time to play but by then it was too late.

The Badgers exposed something I had been griping at the OSU coaching staff about for years – … Read more at FryingPanSports
