Thoughts about NFL weeks 1-4

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 4, and previews of all NFL week 5 games including the Browns/Ravens.

AFC East

Patriots – They look like the best team in the AFC. Only the Court can stop Tom Brady.

Bills – Ty Taylor has been really good and the D is solid.

Jets – The defense is great but no QB means no playoffs.

Dolphins – New head coach but the same players. That is a bad mix.

AFC North

Bengals – Andy Dalton looks great now but he hasn’t played a night or playoff game yet.

Steelers – Mike Vick is no Roethlisberger but the defense isn’t the steel curtain either.

Browns – The offense was questionable but the defense has been terrible.

Ravens – The D is not what it used to be but neither is the O.

AFC South

Colts – Luck is lucky he plays in the AFC Least. Colts get to the playoffs without a D.

Titans – They have 2 NFL starting quality QBS. Lots of teams have none.

Texans – HC Bill O’Brien is not the first to flip a coin … Read more at FryingPanSports

Playoffs? Playoffs?

Note: On NNR today Tony Williams Giants and Knicks beat reporter for Metro New York and I discussed the NFL and NBA in detail. The podcast is on https://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/.

With the Browns win over the Bengals Thursday there has been a lot of talk of the Browns being a contender for the playoffs. We got Tony’s answer on the podcast. But for me the answer is “Maybe.”

The reason I am not sure is the loss to the Jaguars. If the Browns had taken care of business they would have a game and a half lead on the rest of the AFC North which at least this season is the best division in the NFL. The history of the Browns since they have come back is they play up to their opponents or down depending on if the team they are facing is better or worse. Playoff teams win those games.

Playoff teams are able to run the ball. The Browns did well against the Bengals D, but in the previous 3 games averaged under 3 yards per carry. That is not what Playoff teams do.

The third area that distinguishes playoff teams from pretenders is their ability to Read more at FryingPanSports

News, Notes & Rumors for 08/19/14

The radio version of NNR is a podcast while we look for a new broadcast host. Check out last night’s show reviewing week 2 and previewing the Browns/Redskins game.

News:

Thank heavens that the stupid extra point from the 15 yard line is over. The only thing that would be similar to this dumb move would be to move the free throw line to the 3 point distance. Somebody in the NFL office has WAY too much time on his hands.

It was Flag Day weekend again this week. Someone in the NFL office has to get the zebras under control. Every time a pass hits the ground both the QB and WR involved campaign for a flag. The refs are getting more camera time than a senatorial candidate.

There were a number of serious injuries this week. The Falcons lost their starting LT Sam Baker (PCL) for the year. The Jags have lost WRs Cecil Shorts (hamstring), Allen Robinson (hamstring), Tandon Doss (ankle) and RB Toby Gerhart (hip) for several weeks. The Rams lost OL Barrett Jones to back surgery. He is out indefinitely. They also lost RB Isaiah Pead to a ACL injury. He is expected to miss … Read more at FryingPanSports
