Public Displays of Terrible Sportsmanship

Credit: bc-fotografie

Throughout history, many professional sports personalities have taken their competitive edge to the next level, by not being able to keep their frustrations and anger sealed. Usually, such unsavoury acts of sportsmanship are witnessed by the public eye and, as a consequence, their careers are forever tarnished. Here’s a look at the sporting personalities who have committed foul play, a heinous hack, or generally flipped out in front of the cameras for the viewing world to see.

Mike Tyson

This is perhaps one of the most notorious displays of terrible sportsmanship – the infamous WBA heavyweight championship match between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. It was to be a fight which was expected to see an end to Mike Tyson’s career, and one which neither fighter nor referee, Mills Lane, will ever forget. The first two rounds were like any other heavyweight title fight, with both men looking very hungry for the big shots and the even bigger win. There was an accidental, stray head-butt from Holyfield in the second round, cutting Tyson just above is right eye, which he didn’t take kindly too. In retaliation, Tyson resorted to feasting on of Holyfield’s ears in the third … Read more at FryingPanSports

Top 5 Reasons to Hate A-Rod

Seeing how the media was treating A-Rod in his entrance to Spring Training inspired me to write about him.  The fact that there is no drama for him entering this season was a headline story on ESPN earlier this week, and that just goes to show you what type of person he is.  There is always something going on with him, whether he’s injured, complaining about his contract, or linked to performance enhancing drugs.  Here are my top 5 reasons to hate him, and I would love to hear what you think!

5.  Yelling “Got it” when running past the Toronto third baseman is Busch League.
4.  One word:  A-ROID! (It’s amazing how fast the media forgets)
3.  I would have probably loved you if you came to the Red Sox, but you didn’t.
2.  Slapping the ball out of Bronson Aaroyo’s glove and whining about being called out shows that you’d cheat to win.
1.  Announcing that you are declaring for free agency in the 9th inning of the Red Sox World Series game shows us how much you crave the attention.

The John Bright Incident

Visit the African/African-American Historical Museum in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and one of the most unforgettable displays (among many) is dedicated to John Bright. Bright was born in Fort Wayne in 1930, the son of a steel worker. His years playing football at Drake College (now Drake University) in Des Moines, Iowa would be his claim to national recognition. They would also forever link him to a racial incident that brought national disgrace, the John Bright Incident. Despite being the victim of this ugly incident, Bright went on to live his life with grace and resilience.

On October 20, 1951, Drake College’s football team, the Bulldogs, played the Oklahoma A&M Aggies (now the Oklahoma State Cowboys) at Lewis Field in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The star of Drake’s team was the talented young halfback, Johnny Bright, an NCAA All American. At the time, Bright led the nation in yards per game. In 1950, he set the single-season total offense record with 2,400 yards, a record that stood until 1964. That same year, he averaged 266.7 yards a game and scored 18 touchdowns. In 1951, he won the Swede Nelson Award for outstanding sportsmanship and finished fifth in Heisman trophy balloting.

Runners Knee And Running Shoes

Runner’s knee is the bane of many runners, simply because it is such a common but frustrating injury. If it isn’t properly treated it can linger for months if not years, and may never go away unless someone who understands the condition treats the runner. So what can you do about runner’s knee, and more importantly what can you do to help prevent it?

The proper footwear is essential if you want to avoid getting runners knee. It’s no wonder that many people get the condition when they are running on hard surfaces without footwear which cushions the foot. If you have flat feet, then buying running shoes with extra arch support is very important as this stops the tibia rotating inwards. When the tibia rotates inwards it changes the biomechanics of the leg and can lead to excess cartilage wear and, over time, runner’s knee.
One thing to remember is that runner’s knee is not a very accurate description. There are numerous conditions that could be classed as running knee, and health professionals often won’t differentiate between them. If you think you have runners knee – which could mean patella tendonitis, patellofemoral syndrome or something … Read more at FryingPanSports

NFL

UFA S FS Darren Sharper (NO) is reported to have had microfracture knee surgery during the off season according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Sharper was a key part of the Saints D and their playoff run. The typical recovery time for that procedure is 18-24 months. That would also explain why he had such a delay in getting a contract offer. He has signed back with the Saints on a 1 year deal for 1.5M.

The Jones formerly known as “Pacman” is still shopping his services around the league. He went to Detroit last week and visited the Bengals recently. There was no interest by the Lions but the Bengals are at least considering an offer.

The 49ers signed LB Patrick Willis to a new 5 year deal worth 50M with 29M guaranteed.

With the draft of QB Tim Tebow, QB Brady Quinn could be on the move again. The Jags are reported to be interested in obtaining the former Browns 1st round pick.
