The NFC improved more than the AFC in free agent signings and trades.

NOTE: Today on NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I analyzed the Free agent signings in the NFC and the recent signing of TE Rob Housler by the Browns.

While some AFC teams did fairly well in free agency and trades this off season, the majority of NFC teams got stronger while the AFC lost ground.

Winners:

Seahawks – While the Hawks did QB Russell Wilson no favors in his protection, they finally got him a reliable weapon in TE Jimmy Graham. Chances are good we will not see a goal line inside slant pass this season. They also helped the defensive backfield by signing CB Cary Williams and Will Blackmon.

Rams – The signings of LB Akeem Ayers and DT Nick Fairley will help the defense. The trade of QB Sam Bradford to the Eagles for Nick Foles is understandable given Bradford’s injury history.

Redskins – The Skins may not be certain about who will play QB but they helped the defense significantly with the signings of DT Stephen Paea, DT Terrance Knighton, and CB Chris Culliver.

Losers:

Lions – Poor planning by the front office allowed both DT Ndamukong Suh and DT Nick Fairley to leave in … Read more at FryingPanSports

Derek Carr is Weeden-lite!

NFL DraftThe Browns have made some good moves bringing in strong safety Donte Whitner and inside linebacker Karlos Dansby. Whitner is much better in coverage than T.J. Ward was. Dansby makes plays in the backfield rather than 5 yards down field like D’Qwell Jackson did. The problem is that while the signings filled holes, they were holes that the Browns had created.

Now there is a lot of talk about the Browns getting a WR with the 4th overall pick and waiting until the 26th pick to get a QB. I hope that QB is not Derek Carr of Fresno State. Carr is Weeden-lite.

Carr played in a conference that have no idea what defense is all about. When he finally got a chance to prove himself against a team with multiple defensive NFL prospects, he had a complete meltdown.

He has very little experience dealing with a crushing pass rush. He panics at the first flash of opponent color and stops looking down field to make a play. He has very little pocket presence or feel and can not deal with tacklers around his feet. I call him Weeden-lite because Carr lacks Brandon Weeden’s arm strength. … Read more at FryingPanSports
