Does Effort to Extend Hoyer Indicate Concerns about Manziel?

B Hoyer

Extending Brian Hoyer’s contract now makes some sense. However, given the cap space that the Browns have, it is not critical. They could easily afford a long term deal with Hoyer after the season even if he becomes the starter with his play in 2014. So why is GM Ray Farmer so concerned about getting Hoyer signed before the season?

I believe that the recent off field actions by 1st round pick Johnny Manziel have something to do with it.

First, there is the injury concern about Manziel. As the Redskins found out, when a relatively frail QB runs as part of his game, it is critical to have a quality backup. Both Manziel and Robert Griffin III have similar body types. And Griffin has been hurt in both of his seasons in the NFL.

A second reason is more significant. The efforts to resign Hoyer now indicates to me that the team has serious concerns about Manziel’s maturity and development. The recent statements by veteran Browns show some are tiring of the drama that Manziel brings. Each time he makes the NFL Channel opening

segment the view of Manziel by the vets sinks a little lower. Manziel is Read more at FryingPanSports

Johnny Manziel is in Danger of Loosing the Locker Room.

Manziel Money

NNR will resume on July 7th.

So far we have heard only good things about Johnny Manziel on the practice field. That is expected but not particularly significant. Both OTAs and mini-camps are football in shorts. Even Brandon Weeden looked good in shorts. The problem surrounding Manziel is the publicity off the field.

Clearly, Manziel has not violated any laws or team rules. That is a huge positive. However, there are still issues. His comment that he won’t change his lifestyle for anyone was not a good sign. He sounded like a spoiled punk. That indicates he will not limit his exposure to his posse or social media.

Several of the Browns team leaders have said that Manziel is becoming a distraction because of questions about his off the field activities. It doesn’t matter what I think. It doesn’t matter what you think. It does matter a lot what players in the locker room think. Once a QB looses the locker room it is hard to get it back.

If he shows he is willing to pay the price to be effective under center, he can win it back. But it will take a while. In the mean … Read more at FryingPanSports

I really like Johnny Manziel but…

NOTE: News, Notes & Rumors will be on the air Monday at 6PM EDT to talk about the Browns Draft on ( or https://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/) following Mr. Moo at 5 (). Please join us. Thanks

The rumor going around Twitter is that I am a Johnny hater. That is not the case and I wanted to make my position clear for all the other Browns fans that read https://fryingpansports.com/ or listen to NNR. Let me make one thing clear—beyond similar size, there is no comparison between Manziel and the QB I was totally sold on in the 2012 draft Russell Wilson. Wilson is a pocket passer with escape ability.

I like what Manziel did at Texas A&M. I did not have him on my board as a 1st round QB only because I had a number of questions about him. Most of all, I wonder if he will spend the time in the film room that it takes to help a QB particularly a rookie QB develop. Wilson is a film room junkie and works hard on his craft. Manziel would rather go to a basketball game than watch film. He is now saying all the right things. Read more at FryingPanSports

Beware of the Workout Warrior QB prospect.

NFL Draft

Note: Due to Good Friday, there will be no NNR show tonight. From all of us at FPS and NNR, have a wonderful Easter. We will see you Monday.

Scouts raved about the pro days of Johnny Manziel, Derek Carr and Blake Bortles. Buyer beware. What you see is not necessarily what you get.

Manziel is short. OK, he is very short. He does not have the patients to stay in the pocket and look through the trees to find an open receiver. If he does not see his first read open, he leaves the pocket to throw or more likely run.

A comparison is often made with Russell Wilson. That is totally false. Wilson moves to pass. Manziel moves to escape and most likely run. Wilson is a pocket passer that has the speed to run if necessary. Manziel is an out of the pocket guy that moves to run as often as he does to pass. Wilson protects himself when he runs. Manziel will have to learn to do that or get hurt often.

The biggest question about Manziel is can his game translate to the NFL? While he was able to get out of the pocket in … Read more at FryingPanSports
