What to look for this weekend

College Football

#1 Ohio State -3.5 @ #18 Wisconsin – The Bucks go into the Badger Den to play a talented team in a nasty mood after being upset by Michigan State 2 weeks ago. The key to the game will be the Badger running game which is 11th in the nation (241 yards a game) against the 5th ranked OSU D. Look for the Bucks to run the ball more against Wisconsin to keep RBs Clay and White off the field. OSU has changed RBs with RB Saine becoming more of a receiver and RB Herron becoming the runner. Too much of the running game has been QB Pryor. The Bucks have to get better run blocking from the O line. OSU got an additional incentive when ESPN projected the team 5th in the BCS rankings. OSU wins and covers.

#5 Nebraska -9.5 vs. Texas – The Horns have not lost 3 games in a row since George Washington was inaugurated or it seems that long. Texas want the game more than Nebraska but has too many holes to win the game. Nebraska has nightmares about last years Big 12 Championship game they felt was stolen by Texas. What to look for in football this weekend in College football.

#2 Alabama 26 Auburn 21 Every run for an undefeated season has some close calls. But the Auburn D exposed a flaw in the Tide. They can’t protect QB McElroy from a speed rusher on the edge. That will be noticed by both Florida and whatever team they play in a bowl. If the game was not for bragging rights in the state, you could say that Bama got caught in a perfect sandwich game. That was not the problem. Bama played a very average game against a very average Auburn team.

#3 Texas 49 Texas A&M 39 The Horns won but their pass defense looked terrible. IF they have a healthy QB Lee, Nebraska can exploit the Texas zone by running crossing routes and flooding a zone. TAM gave the Horn D fits all game long. Had a couple of bounces gone the other way, the 6-5 Aggies would have won.

#5 Cincinnati 49 Illinois 36 Cincy QB Pike looks like a pro prospect. He has a nice delivery and is accurate on all the passes you ask for. The only question is arm strength which I think is over rated. I will be doing a complete analysis for … Read more at FryingPanSports

What did we learn about College ball this week?

There are only 3 top teams in the NCAA—Florida, Texas and Alabama. And there is a better than average chance that none of them will make it undefeated through the 09 season.

#3 Alabama had more trouble with Kentucky than they should have. Based on Florida coming into tobacco land and wining 41-7, the Bama win of 38-20 was not too impressive. Kentucky scored TDs in the 3rd and 4th quarter but against a mostly 2nd unit team. Florida also had a second unit on the field in the second half. The Gators won’t face Bama except possibly in the SEC Championship game.

#4 LSU got a quality win over #18 Georgia between the Hedges. Any SEC win on the road against a ranked team is impressive. Georgia scored a go ahead TD with 1:09 left. The LSU drive for the winning TD was impressive. They still have to be concerned about the inability to get TDs in the red zone. They were forced to kick 2 field goals in the first half because they couldn’t get to the endzone.

#6 Virginia Tech struggled to beat Duke. That isn’t a surprise because the Duke game was a … Read more at FryingPanSports
