The Eagle D is coming around.

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 6, our views of all week 6 games including the Browns/Broncos.

On Monday night the Giants scored a TD on their 1st possession. But then the Eagle D shut them down. While the Eagle O is still trying to fit all the new gadgets into the game, the D has figured it out and is playing very well. The early issues on defense were primarily caused by the lack of rest. When the O can’t convert 3rd downs in a no huddle O, the D is on the field a lot.

The team has missed ILB Mychal Kendricks for a couple of weeks. Despite that the D is playing aggressive defense. Rookie 3rd round pick Jordan Hicks has been outstanding. He has helped the D continue to improve. His instincts are outstanding.

Two early interceptions, one of which was a pick 6, made Giant QB Eli Manning tentative. That combined with WR Odell Beckham Jr. being the primary target made the job of the Eagle D much easier. … Read more at FryingPanSports

News, Notes & Rumors for week 3

nfl

News:

There is trouble in 49er land.  The passing game has gone south because the O line can’t protect Colin Kaepernick and the receivers can’t catch, the running game has disappeared and the D can’t get off the field.  Now LB Aldon Smith’s locker has been cleaned out and the team reports he has been given a leave of absence indefinitely while he goes to a rehab facility.

The Giants and Redskins are equally miserable.  Both are 0-3 but for different reasons.  The Giants can’t run the ball and QB Eli Manning throws as many to the other team as he does to his own.    The Redskins are waiting for Robert Griffin III to get back to where he was last year.  He is getting better every week but needs his receivers to catch the ball.  The Redskin defense stinks.  Neither team is getting into the post season but the Skins have hope.  The Giants do not.

The Browns traded RB Trent Richardson who was the third pick overall in 2012 to the Colts for a 2014 1st round pick.  For my thoughts on the  trade check out my editorial The Browns’ 2013 season has just been Read more at FryingPanSports

Eagles Looking Strong in 2011/2012

Preseason is over, but the war has just begun. Football fans have been coming out of summer hibernation to support their favorite teams with fervor, body paint, beer, air horns, and dreams of the Super Bowl dancing in their heads. Many teams are already proving their worth in the pre-season, and the Philadelphia Eagles are one of them.

Football fans alike are excited for what the season and these teams will bring, and Eagles fans think that the Eagles may have what it takes this year to make it all the way to the Super Bowl in 2012.

“They signed a bunch of free agents that just makes them incredible,” Dr. Ken Siegel, a dentist and die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan comments. “Besides having Michael Vick, they signed a bunch of free agents that are just kick-ass!”

The Eagles are packing a hefty roster balanced on one hand with well known and fantastic players, and on the other with rookies, and really cleaned up during the Free Agent acquisitions. Couple that with their 3 to 1 winning streak during preseason, and this may make the Philadelphia Eagles the team to beat this season.

Critical questions you must answer about a draft choice.

QB

By Bill Smith

The draft like life is based on rules. In both, it isn’t how much you know, or who you know that gives you the power to succeed. It is how much you know about who you know that gives you power.

The secrets to a GM keeping his job is simple—avoid draft busts and don’t trade the barn for someone else’s head cases. We will discuss trade theory later. Now I want to review the questions that scouts and GMs MUST ask about players before they take the plunge to draft them.

Because of the controversy about the Lions taking a QB or OL, today we will look at that position. We will look at critical questions on other positions later in the week.

Over the last 30 years, more QBs taken in the first 2 rounds have failed than have been at least serviceable. While a good number of those guys have gone to really bad teams, that does not explain the high rate of failure. As a HC or GM, you can survive a QB bust taken in round 3 or 4. You probably won’t survive a bust at QB taken in the first … Read more at FryingPanSports
