The Browns chose wisely for their OC.

John DeFilippo

Yesterday the Browns introduced John DeFilippo as their new offensive coordinator. In my judgment, that was an excellent choice. He had been the QB coach of the Raiders. But what I like best about him is he brings a history of fixing broken QB mechanics. If the Browns are ever going to get anything out of their 1st round pick of Johnny Manziel, DeFilippo is going to have to do major surgery on Johnny’s mechanics and attitude.

As QB coach for the Jets in 2009, he faced a difficult problem. The team drafted rookie Mark Sanchez who had started just 1 year for USC. It was DeFilippo’s job to turn Sanchez into an NFL starter. He was able to help Sanchez lead the Jets to the playoffs with a 9-7 record.

As QB coach for San Jose State, he molded Jordan La Secla into a serviceable QB that threw for 2860 yards and a QB rating of 125.8 in 2010. The next season he helped Matt Faulkner throw for 3149 yards and a QBR of 131.6.

In 2012 he was named QB coach for the Raiders. He turned Terrelle Pryor from Read more at FryingPanSports

10 Things to look for in the 2014 NFL Draft

NFL Draft (2)

NOTE: No show tonight at 6 PM BUT we will do a post draft show beginning after the Browns pick at 26. Join us for my take on the draft live on .

Here are some of my thoughts as the 1st round approaches. Enjoy the draft and GO BROWNS!

1. Draft day trade downs will not provide the bounty of picks that they have in the past. The Cowboy draft trade chart is history. Last year Oakland moved from 3 to 13 for just a 2nd round pick. That will be the norm rather than an exception.

2. Look for several trades in the first round. The new CBA makes moving up in the draft financially affordable. The lower cost in terms of picks makes getting your guy easier.

3. Several quarterbacks will be drafted particularly late in the first round. The new CBA gives teams a 5th year option on players selected in the 1st round. That makes a QB cheaper longer due to the lower rookie pay chart. Teams high in the 2nd round that passed on a QB with their 1st pick will want to trade back into the 1Read more at FryingPanSports

Beware of the Workout Warrior QB prospect.

NFL Draft

Note: Due to Good Friday, there will be no NNR show tonight. From all of us at FPS and NNR, have a wonderful Easter. We will see you Monday.

Scouts raved about the pro days of Johnny Manziel, Derek Carr and Blake Bortles. Buyer beware. What you see is not necessarily what you get.

Manziel is short. OK, he is very short. He does not have the patients to stay in the pocket and look through the trees to find an open receiver. If he does not see his first read open, he leaves the pocket to throw or more likely run.

A comparison is often made with Russell Wilson. That is totally false. Wilson moves to pass. Manziel moves to escape and most likely run. Wilson is a pocket passer that has the speed to run if necessary. Manziel is an out of the pocket guy that moves to run as often as he does to pass. Wilson protects himself when he runs. Manziel will have to learn to do that or get hurt often.

The biggest question about Manziel is can his game translate to the NFL? While he was able to get out of the pocket in … Read more at FryingPanSports
