Wheel

Ryan Neiman of Sports District Radio is our guest on NNR tonight 6 PM EDT on or https://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/.

“Hi I am Roger Goodell and welcome to my NFL Wheel of Misfortune show! Johnny who is our first victim?”

“Well Roger, it is Arizona Cardinal linebacker Daryl Washington come on down! Daryl has been a bad boy that has been caught taking PED’s for a third time.”

“Well Daryl spin the NFL Wheel of Misfortune!”

“Too bad for you Daryl you get indefinite suspension. That is the worst penalty we give out. It means you have to sit out for 12 months from today and petition for reinstatement. Then Daryl, if I feel like it and you have been a very good boy I might let you back in the league. Of course I might not let you back in too if I am having a bad day. Daryl would you like to appeal the penalty and spin again?”

“Yes please.”

(Buzzer sounds)

“Too bad Daryl. I decided your appeal is denied and you get the indefinite suspension. All in all Daryl that will cost you at least 3 million dollars. Please take our home version of the game as a cancellation prize. Johnny who is our next victim?”

“Well Roger, we welcome Brandon Browner cornerback for the Pats. Brandon come on down!”

“OK Brandon, spin the NFL Wheel of Misfortune! Brandon has been a bad boy as well taking things that are on our banned list.”

click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click

“Well Brandon you got lucky. You got just a 4 game suspension! Congratulations. Johnny who is our next victim?”

“Ray Rice, running back of the Baltimore Ravens, come on down! Ray was caught on video knocking his girl friend out cold in a casino and dragging her unconscious out of an elevator.”

“Ray welcome of NFL Wheel of Misfortune. Spin the wheel.”

click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click-click

“Ray, you win the game with just a 2 game suspension! The down side is you will have to marry her to keep her from testifying against you. In the long run that will probably cost you more than a long suspension. You can appeal and spin again if you want.”

“No, that is fine I’ll take it.”

“OK Johnny who is next?”

“Josh Gordon wide receiver for the Browns come on down! Josh has been a good boy that has passed 70 tests but he was a bit over the limit on a test for weed. Josh says it was because he was around people smoking weed.”

“Welcome Josh. Spin the wheel!”

“Sorry Josh but it looks like the wheel still spinning. I also have a shout out to a shut in player Jags wide receiver Justin Blackmon. Justin, we are sending you a home version of our game. Well folks, that is going to do it for this edition of Roger Goodell’s NFL Wheel of Misfortune. But tune in soon here on the NFL Channel to find out how Josh Gordon does and the penalty for Colts owner Robert Irsay.”

“Roger Goodell’s NFL Wheel of Misfortune is a production of Roger Goodell and the NFL.”

Danny Kanell agreed with NFL on Rice suspension.

Rice

Monday Top questions in AFC North & South going into training camp 6 PM EDT onNNR or https://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/. Please join us.

The 4 letter network strikes again!  Danny Kanell appeared on Dari & Mel Saturday and agreed with Roger Goodell’s two game suspension of Ray Rice. Kanell commented that Goodell knows more than the rest of us about what exactly went on between Rice and his lady. I have no idea what Rice or his wife said to Goodell and frankly I do not care. No matter what she did, there is no action short of shooting him with a gun that justifies a male hitting a female period.

The other aspect of the Rice suspension that Kanell mentioned was that this was the first violation of any kind that Rice has committed. SO WHAT! In my opinion it is the severity of the violation and not the past record of the individual that should determine the length of the suspension.

Kanell said he has 3 daughters. That surprised me more than anything else. My wife and I have 3 daughters as well. I would never say that anything could ever justify a guy striking a woman.

The other aspect of this debacle is the inconsistency of the suspension decisions. A player that traded autographs for tattoos got a 4 game suspension despite the fact that it happened before he declared for the NFL draft. The second failed test of smoking pot gets a player a 4 game suspension. How can Goodell possibly justify a 2 game suspension for Rice? If Rice had thrown her off a 2nd floor balcony would that be a 4 game suspension?

There is another possibility that could explain the decision. Colts owner Jim Irsay is facing suspension for DUI and controlled substance possession. Could the reduced penalty for Rice be a warmer and fuzzier Goodell as he faces suspending an owner? We will likely know more about that possibility when the decision on the appeal of Brown WR Josh Gordon comes down. I do not expect any reduction in the indefinite suspension on Gordon.

OPEN LETTER TO JIMMY HASLAM

I have been a Browns fan since 1954. Now I am no longer able to go to practices or games due to a major back problem. Since the practices are sold out, the Browns should live cam them on http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/ so that the rest of us can see what is going on. This would be a great service to the fans and the technology is cheap and effective.

Manziel battling the playbook is not a good thing.

Manziel Drft

Browns head coach Mike Pettine made the comment yesterday that Johnny Manziel biggest challenge is the playbook rather than Brian Hoyer. ESPN and most of the national media took that to mean that as soon as Manziel gets the playbook down, he will be the starter. Not so fast my friend.

What Pettine means is that Manziel is struggling to learn and understand the playbook. That is not a surprise. At Texas A&M the playbook was the size of the US Constitution. To Manziel the Browns playbook looks more like the IRS rules and regulations.

We were told that he was studying even while going to and from Vegas. Maybe the inflatable swan had an I-pad built in. His time enjoying himself could be costing him now. You can’t win the locker room as a QB unless you know the playbook COLD and can communicate it in practice. Until he can do that he will not get a snap in the regular season.

Also in college Manziel never had to make pre-snap reads. His offensive teammates took their position on the field then read the signs on the sideline to determine which play would be executed. Manziel also never had to worry about blocking adjustments but he will be expected to know and implement them now.

In the NFL, a GM or coach that listens to what the fans want will be sitting with them soon. Manziel hurt his standing in the locker room with his off the field partying. Once a QB loses the locker room it is very hard to get it back. Hoyer seems to have a better understanding of the playbook and the support of most of the team.

The bottom line: Don’t expect Johnny to be the starting Browns QB any time soon.

QB Controversies can be hazardous to a coach’s employment.

nfl

One of the things that head coaches at all levels of sports fear the most is a QB controversy. That is particularly true in the NFL. This preseason there are a number of them around the league. However, the analysis of each will be the fodder for future articles.

The point of this posting is the danger that they pose for the continued employment of coaches around the league. Despite what you have heard about pro players there is one thing you should know—players know which QB gives the team the best chance to win. If the coaching staff make the right choice everyone has a decent chance of holding onto his job. If not, the coaching staff will appreciate the extended unemployment benefits the federal government now provides.

The biggest risk of making a job threatening mistake is in the hands of Rex Ryan. The Jets have said that there will be a true competition between Geno Smith and Mike Vick. The staff wants Smith to win the job but based on what I have seen Vick gives the team a much better chance to win now. However I suspect that unless Smith stinks the place up so badly that the Jets need to call in the EPA Super Fund to clean up the mess, he will keep the job.

The problems for any coach that selects a QB that the team sees as second best involve losing games, and worse yet losing the locker room. A QB that loses his team can get it back with great play. It is almost impossible for a coach to get a lost locker room back. When he loses the locker room, the players tune him out. They no longer feel they can win. They refuse to take coaching. And they are willing to pad their own stats than do what is best for the team. When those things happen ownership needs to find a new staff.

So watch the preseason games of teams with a QB controversy. If nothing else, they will be fun to watch. THAT is truly “reality TV.”
