Ryan Watts is the latest high school recruit to take the college world by storm. Watts played for Little Elm (Texas) High School, and he originally committed to Oklahoma. However, much to the delight of Ohio State, he de-committed from his original school and committed to them. Why did that happen? There are many reasons why this highly touted star high school player decided to become an Ohio State Buckeye!

Watts was heavily pursued by Ohio State.

This is pretty self-explanatory, considering that Ryan Watts de-committed from Oklahoma two weeks after visiting the Ohio State campus. Even though they knew he had already made a verbal commitment to Oklahoma, recruiters Jeff Hafley and coach Tony Alford pursued Watts relentlessly, selling him not just on how great the Buckeyes campus would be for him but on how much better it would be for his family. He finally committed to the Buckeyes after considering his other offers.

Watts was a highly sought-after recruit.

Another reason why this is Ohio State’s gain and Oklahoma’s loss is that Watts has been a highly sought-after recruit for at least the past year. At Little Elm, Watts was a true phenom, notching an interception vs. Wakeland High School last week, a 46-yard touchdown reception in his last game against Independence High School, and a 24-yard touchdown against Liberty High School. Simply put, some scouts were looking at these performances, and they liked what they saw. This was one of the main reasons why Ryan Watts was recruited by a dazzling array of colleges! He got offers not just from Oklahoma and Ohio State, but also from Alabama, Notre Dame, LSU, Michigan, and Texas among many others. Many different programs wanted him for his explosive athletic talents.

Why was Watts so heavily recruited by Ohio State?

Of course, all of this fanfare begs the question: why was Watts so sought after by Ohio State? There were several reasons why they wanted Ryan Watts. First of all, they were impressed with his skills on the defensive side of the ball. The Ohio State Buckeyes had recently hired defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley, and he wanted to solidify Ohio State’s core of outside corner-backs. The coach was ambitious, to say the least. He not only wanted a good outside core; he wanted the best in the nation. He was so impressed with some of Ryan Watts’ skills at Little Elm that he knew he had to do everything in his power to steal him away from Oklahoma. Although it took some doing, he was able to do very gradually and he now has his solid defense. Look for Watts to help Ohio State compete for the National Championship in the near future!
