In a word NO! Not in my opinion. The Heisman committee wanted RB Reggie Bush to return his trophy because he was not eligible due to the benefits that his parents received during his career at USC. A guy I have a great deal of respect for–Mel Kiper–said yesterday on ESPN that anyone that voted against Newton because of the allegations against his father should lose their right to vote.

Mel, you are wrong on this one. There is every reason to vote against someone if their eligibility is in serious question. Had the NCAA done their job by finishing the investigation on time, this would not be an issue. Had the pinheads that write the NCAA Rules done their job, it would also not be an issue.

As those of you that read this site often know, the NCAA has no specific rule against play for pay. When asked about going pro, one Big 12 player commented that he was not looking forward to the cut in pay. That was a joke but the issue of the parents of players getting paid great sums of money is not.

EDITORIAL: The NCAA declares Auburn QB Newton eligible

2010 BCS National Championship Game
Image via Wikipedia

To protect their backsides, the Auburn administration declared QB Newton ineligible and then asked the NCAA to make him eligible for the SEC Championship game.

The NCAA obliged like the faithful dog it has become for the power conferences and granted eligibility. There seems to be little doubt that Newton’s Dad tried to extort $180K from two other schools for his son’s services.

The NCAA said there was “no direct evidence” that Newton Jr. had any idea that his father was trying to sell his services. That is crap and everyone knows it.

If the BcS was threatened by a QB with eligibility issues from a 1st place Boise State or TCU team, you can bet the house, the car, the wife and your first born that the NCAA would suggest that the QB be held out until the full investigation was complete. Given its history for prompt action in the Reggie Bush case, that would occur in 2099.

The NCAA should complete the investigation immediately. To assume that the child knew nothing about the father getting nearly 200K is ludicrous. The NCAA needs to release the evidence of innocence.

This organization is totally incompetent when it … Read more at FryingPanSports

Should Former USC RB Reggie Bush be stripped of his Heisman trophy?

s

Yahoo sports is reporting that the Heisman committee will strip Reggie Bush of his trophy by the end of September. According to my sources, no vote has been taken by the committee yet but there have been discussions about the issue.

WHY HE SHOULD:

There is not question that he and his parents received benefits that would have made him ineligible to play under NCAA rules. The Heisman bylaws say that the player must be eligible to play in order to be considered for the award. While Bush was eligible, had the NCAA known about the housing and other benefits that he and his family received, he would not have been.

His actions or failure to prevent actions of those around him have caused his school irreparable harm by suspension of bowl opportunities and loss of scholarships. His actions caused those that followed him to USC to pay for his indiscretions.

Pete Carroll, the former HC of the Trojans now that he slipped out of town to Seattle and the NFL, claims he knew nothing about it. Ditto by former Athletic Director Mike Garrett. I have to wonder about that. While my semi-pro teams never had 100 players, in the … Read more at FryingPanSports

The Saints will come marching into the end zone often.

t

There is no question that the Saints have one of the most dangerous Os in the league. Their win/loss record will depend most on how well they can stop the other team from doing the same thing.

Drew Brees is the #2 QB in most Fantasy Drafts this year for good reason. In the last 3 seasons he has thrown 26, 28 and 34 TDs. The only comment that some QB gurus make is that he is too short at a little under 6 feet to see over the O linemen. Let’s be honest. When you have 5 guys that are between 6-8 and 6-5 in front of you, you have to be 8 feet tall to see over them. Every QB needs to look in between his linemen to find his target. Brees has it all—leadership, arm, accuracy, ability to read coverage, ability to move in the pocket and rush awareness. His backup is Mark Brunell. Mark has to use Grecian Formula 88 to keep his hair brown because Grecian Formula 44 wasn’t strong enough. He is 39 but is a reasonable backup. Joey Harrington joins Brunell on the bench.

The Saints running game is a little up in … Read more at FryingPanSports
