A Look At The Fiat 500

Jennifer Lopez

After a long absence from the US, Fiat, largely due to the relationship they are involved with at the new Chrysler Corporation, re-entered the market with the Fiat 500. During their opening introduction salvos, they featured full page newspaper ads that high-lighted the small car. Quite honestly, the first impression, based on these ads was not particularly favorable. It looked like just another toy car doomed to quick extinction by American tastes for big and bigger.

Then something happened. Perhaps it was the Jennifer Lopez link, but when TV ads began appearing that gave close up views of this vehicle, perception changed. What a delightful little car this Fiat actually was, once you got up close and personal. This little gem has great, novel European lines, and extremely attractive styling. Like Jennifer, there is no doubt that this thing is hot, which may not be everyone’s favorite temperature. To be sure, it is small. Surprisingly, for its size it seats two rather comfortably. That is the market segment they are after.

Many American car buyers will not be impressed. To many, Euro style means unattractive. There is some apprehension about quality, as well as price and power. The Fiat 500 comes into the market with a MSRP just under $16,000. But the range for upscale models coming in the future can exceed $20,000. Fiat claims mileage of 30 city/38 hwy with its 1.4 liter engine. None of these figures can be considered exceptional for its class, but they are acceptable. These are the kinds of issues stateside drivers will have on their minds when they consider purchasing a Fiat. Some already wonder why this particular vehicle was chosen for the US market when Fiat has a number of sportier and more practical models in their line-up. Others will regard this sub compact as a novelty, but novelty, if done right does have a market.

The Fiat 500 is being offered in a hatchback and well as a convertible. Both offer Bluetooth technology as standard equipment as well as usb playback. The convertible offers more standard items like 15” wheels, AM/FM/CD3 radio, leather steering wheel and chrome wheel covers. Options include a Bose sound system and a leather package. Leave it to the Europeans to offer a lighter and ashtray option. The standard transmission is a 5 speed manual but a 6 speed automatic is also offered.

Often the attractiveness and appeal of a car can be enhanced when vibrant colors are offered. Fiat is clearly aware of that and offers 14 appealing hues, and as many as 12 seat covering options. Even the convertible tops colors; black, beige and red are fun. Incidentally, the top can be lowered at speeds up to 50 mph.

So far the jury is out on the diminutive bug-mobile. If cute, and fun and different are acceptable, it works. If the goal is a vehicle for families, it’s not the best choice. Neither is it the ideal vehicle for long trips or carrying cargo. If the goal is a very cute sub compact car that will do well in city driving conditions, the Fiat 500 or the Fiat 500c convertible can be the perfect vehicle.

When it comes to climbing outdoors there are several different options you can take. You can choose to enjoy bouldering or you can go for something that requires a little more skill like free solo climbing or ice climbing. Understanding the different types of climbing activities out there can help you to find which one really fits your niche and gives you a sport that you can really enjoy. Before you just go out and start climbing it is important to take professional lessons and to really perfect your skills. Here are some of the different types of climbing:

  • Conventional rock climbing – this is where you have a nice rope, harness, and you often scale up a large rock face with the assistance of other climbers and having a person to belay and to provide you with safety. This is a great way to climb and it is a lot of fun. Most people will learn how to start climbing this way indoors before they move onto outdoor climbing where it gets to be a bit tricky. Sport rock climbing also falls under this category as you have people that leave certain gear attached to the rock so you do not need to bring it with you.
  • Bouldering – many people enjoy bouldering when they are out hiking and enjoying the wilderness. Bouldering us where you will find very large boulders and you will climb up about 10 feet on the boulder. Usually you will not have any protective gear except a mat if you fall.

Ice climbing – this is also very popular but it tends to be very dangerous if you don’t take proper safety precautions. You need to use special equipment and climb up frozen waterfalls and glaciers. It helps to climb with a team of experts to ensure you will be safe and protected.

Tips For Saving Money On Ski Accessories This Winter

Tags: , , , , , , ,

When it comes to buying ski equipment, it should come as no surprise that it can be expensive.  In fact, the truth is, I’m sure more people would participate in this great sport if it were cheaper.  However, what many may not realize, is that with a little effort, you can save quite a bit of money and not break the bank buying the gear you need o get out and enjoy yourself!

When it comes to saving money on ski accessories, items like ski poles, gloves and goggles, the trick is to find retailers online who are offering some sort of buyer incentives.  These incentives generally take the form of coupon offers, free shipping promotions, and reward programs.  However, there are many other incentives as well, in fact more and more retailers are offering discounts and free gifts just for “liking” them on Facebook.  I recently saw one retailer giving away free ski hats to people who “like” them.

If such buyer incentives are still not enough, and the prices seem to high still, I suggest turning to used equipment.  You can find used ski equipment at various places, online more and more ski retailers are beginning to sell used gear demo gear and the prices are amazingly cheap!  You can also keep an eye out for a local ski swap, these generally occur in the fall before the lifts start turning, and are typically put on by your local ski shop or ski mountain.  Ski swaps are a great place to find all sorts of new and used ski gear for much less then you would pay elsewhere!

Regardless of how you find your ski deals, the point is they are out there, you just need to know where to look.  One word of caution however, when it comes to buying cheap ski gear, do not buy something simply because the price is right.  Make sure it fits and is something you absolutely need, otherwise you are just throwing your money away.

The Beauty – RC Sailboat Versus the Sheer Acceleration of a Speedboat

Sailboats moored

Image via Wikipedia

When I was a kid I remember the older men racing radio-controlled sailboats at the local lake near my house.  I used to live in a windy location so the venue was ideal for the sport.  Soon after, the hot-rods came by and started bringing the much faster nitro and methanol powered RC Powerboats.  Those things were incredible!  They used to host races every single weekend.  The fever soon became an obsession.  It wasn’t long before there were 30-50 guys at the lake every weekend racing boats.

Even with the extra speed of the gas-powered boats, the love of rc sailboats still remains.  In fact, some people GREATLY prefer the slow, quiet and peaceful drive of a sailboat.  I mean, most people spend the entire week in a fast-paced environment.  Some will argue that the last thing they need is more stress from being competitive in the weekends as well. For those boats, radio-controlled sailboats and other quiet vehicles, such as gliders are probably the best bet.

But either way, there’s no denying the sheer speed an awesome acceleration of a gas-powered RC speedboat.  Not only that, but they look unreal too!  Some are designed to look just like the race boats in real life.  That’s just plain cool!  Even the sailors can appreciate that!  That’s even if they have to wear earplugs to avoid going deaf with the loud screaming of the muffle-less nitro gas engines.

Next time you are thinking of what to do with some free time, you might want to consider one of these awesome toys.  Maybe the water is not for you.  In which case you can hit the dirt with an RC buggy or maybe the skies with one of the many airplane kits available.  But, if you are a water-lover like me, a boat will be the ultimate experience.  And yes, watching a sailboat can often seem just like a powerboat – only quiet, and at the speed at which the speedboat would be traveling if it were dragging along 2 unusually large aluminum boat anchors attached to its transom.  But, that’s the beauty of it.  It’s all about the slow speed, the style and the freedom.  That is RC sailing!
