Austin Davis is the right QB to start this week.

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day and detailed the Browns loss to the Ravens including the details of the blocked field goal attempt.

Austin Davis has a 3 year deal and had more starts than Johnny Manziel. He is at the least a solid backup QB and at best perhaps a part time starter. He has an NFL arm but not a cannon. He sees the field and reads defenses fairly well. And the most significant advantage he has over Manziel is that he has not lied to the coaching staff.

The last statement is most significant. Even if Manziel was on the field a clone of Cam Newton the fact is that he can not be trusted to become the face of the franchise. Manziel has been coddled his entire life. That has resulted in an attitude that he can get away with almost anything including lying to the staff.

Often a person who goes into rehab is not able to sustain a clean life after resuming their lives. It often takes 3 or 4 trips to rehab to over come their addiction. When that person has been able to avoid punishment for his indiscretions it could even require more treatment.

The bottom line is Manziel is not an NFL quality starting QB. My opinion is shared by a number of better known NFL analysts. He would be better off with a new team. He has burned too many bridges in Cleveland. Admittedly he has progressed this season. But he will never put in the work to fully develop his talent because he is as interested in being a celebrity as he is a football player. As long as that is the case he will ever even become as good as he could be. That also means he will never succeed in the NFL.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and previewed all of this week’s games.

CH GB-8.5 CH HC Fox has a lot of work to do to turn this team around. Cutler & O line will not be back.

4-6 7-3 D is for Disaster. That is what this D has been.

GB Rodgers has not been good & WRS don’t get separation. This team needs more weapons.

Run game needs to get back to 140y/g level. Lacy can do that when he is motivated.

D has been very inconsistent. Pass rush was better last week. That is the key.

OK-1,5 TN OK Carr struggled against the rush last week. Not a problem because TN does not have one.

4-6 2-8 Run game has to support the pass. That is not only on Murray but the O line as well.

D is getting better but HC Del Rio needs more play makers.

TN Mar iota has struggled as most rookies do but he has not had a lot of help.

The D is top 6 in yards but 18th in points per game (23.3).

BF KC-4 BF Taylor has been solid but BF needs to give him more planned runs.

5-5 5-5 Run game works when McCoy is healthy. Need to keep him in the game.

BF used an amoeba D to confuse the NE O line Monday. This worked well & could be used the rest of the season.

BF stopped NE run as well. D is very solid & should get DT Kyle Williams back soon.

KC Smith without RB Charles is like a PBR sandwich without peanut butter or bread.

KC is down to their 3rd RB Spencer Ware after #2 West was hurt.

D has been good but they need to be more consistent with the pass rush.

TB IN-3 TB Winston has been good in the last few weeks but let’s wait to put him in the HOF.

5-5 5-5 TB D is 26th in points allowed. DT McCoy & LB David are outstanding but they are about all they have.

IN Hasselbeck is in & been decent but run game & O line stink.

D stinks too. It is a disaster. They are 19th in pts allowed but have been worse than that recently.

NG-2.5 WA NG Eli has been consistent & O is 4th in scoring but run game has disappeared. NG is 26th in rushing.

5-5 4-6 D ranks 32nd against the pass. That is a major reason the NG are 5-5.

WA Cousins has been barely decent (15TDS 10X) & the run game has gone south due to injuries to the RBS.

O is 20th in scoring & pass yards & 25th in rushing at just 95y/g

D is even worse ranking 25th in scoring & 30th against the run. This team is a dumpster fire on both sides of the ball.

NO HO-3 NO Despite a fire sale on O that side has not been the problem. 8Th in scoring 3rd in yards & 2nd in passing.

4-6 5-5 The problem has been the D. Last in pts against, & yards, 31st vs the pass & 29th vs the rush.

That is why DC Ryan got fired.

HO Hoyer will start for HO.

HO has no O, no QB, & no run game. Other than that they are fine.

The O has moved the ball between the 20s but can’t get in the endzone.

The D has not been as good as expected. 15Th in scoring & 20th against the run.

MN AT-2 MN Took a hard loss vs GB last week. The O line let GB sack Bridgewater 6 times & hold Peterson to 45y on 13 att.

7-3 6-4 Peterson & Bridgewater need better blocking. MN O would be much better.

The D has been an under-reported story. It is 3rd in PPG allowed at 18.4 just .2 ppg behind NE.

AT This team has fallen & can’t get up. The problem has been more on O than D.

Ryan needs more help.

D ranks 12th giving up 21.4 ppg but that is up in the last 4 losses.

21-7 before the IN scored 17 unanswered points in part due to a Ryan pick6.

ST CN-8.5 ST The trade for Foles has been a disaster. ST ranks 31st in scoring. The good news is Bradford was benched too.

4-6 8-2 The D has been good but as good as expected. It ranks 10th giving up 19.9 ppg.

CN Can CN come back from 2 straight losses? The D can but I wonder about Dalton.

O scored just 6 pts against HO 2 wks ago. Last week the 31 vs AZ was much better.

D gave up the critical drive vs AZ, That has to stop if CN is going to win in the playoffs.

SD JK-4 SD SD O line & D has already left for LA mentally. Rivers is expected to win games on his own. That is why they have 2 wins.

2-8 4-6 O is 22nd in ppg. The problem has not been Rivers. He is 2nd in pass yards without a run game or O line.

SD D ranks 31st in PPG allowed at 28.2. It could not be more giving.

MI NJ-3.5 MI Tannehill got Franchise $ but has yet to produce that kind of O. He is 21st in pass yards & has 17 TDS 10 picks.

4-6 5-5 D has been a disappointment as well. 20Th in ppg, 26th in ypg & 31 vs run.

NJ NJ needs a QB–any QB. It is 14th in ppg but that has been because of the run game (14th)

Pass game is 19th 2 QBS have 18TDS but 12 picks.

D has been less than expected in part because of injuries. It is 11th in ppg & pass yards.

With the $ spent on DBS, that has been disappointing.

AZ-10 SF AZ Palmer has been spectacular (27TDS 9X). AZ is 1st in PPG & ypg.

8-2 3-7 D is 13th in ppg 3rd in ypg. Losses have not hurt D that badly.

SF O died & was laid to rest last wk vs SE. 32nd in PPG 13.9) & YDS 30th Pass y & 18th in rush y.

Gabbert has struggled as expected with no O line or play makers on the outside.

D suffered lots of losses & is 23rd in PPG 28th YPG The team is a dumpster fire.

PT SE-3.5 PT PT is 2.5 games behind CN. Now they are on the hunt. PT will challenge CN for the AFC North title.

6-4 5-5 O is 12th in ppg (23.6) despite not having Roethlisberger or RB Bell for much of the season. But Ben is back so look out.

D is 6th in ppg (19.1) & 5th in Rush y. It has been better than expected.

SE Before the season we predicted that SE could fail to get to the playoffs unless they fixed a terrible O line.

Wilson has gotten the lead in every game he started but the D gave away leads late in the 5 losses.

SE has to win 5 games to make the playoffs.

NE-3 DV NE Pats are perfect & with Osweiler at QB that is not likely to change this week.

10-0 8-2 Brady was bothered by pressure from BF Monday. DV can do that as well.

NE is 2nd in ppg 3rd in ypg 1st in pass y but 28th in rush yards.

D is 1st in ppg but 15th in yards.

DV Osweiler will start for DV against NE. Good luck with that.

Given the issues with the O (19th in ppg 22.2) they are lucky to be 8-2.

Run game has died. DV is 27th in rush ypg.

D has kept DV in playoff contention ranking 2nd in ppg 1st in yards & passing.

Joey Bosa Ohio State buckeyes

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and previewed all of this week’s games including a detailed analysis of the Browns game.

Like most Ohio State fans, I was disappointed at the loss to the Spartans. But more than anything else I was shocked to see Joey Bosa fail to perform in the 1st big game of the season. For those of us that are draft-nicks, one thing that predicts failure in the NFL is failure in big games in college. A stiff can look good playing against the Sisters of the Perpetually Miserable. But how a player preforms against a big time opponent has always been an indicator of how that player would fair at the next level.

Bosa did nothing in the MSU game. That is all I needed to see to take him off my board. He might turn out to be a good or even great player. But I can not risk taking a player like that with a top 5 pick in the draft.

Samantha Bunten of NBC Sport and I wish each of you a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Why the Browns can’t trust Johnny Manziel.

Johnny Manziel On a Swan

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and previewed all of this week’s games.

Johnny Manziel just does not listen. He was given the keys to the Browns, limited as that vehicle may be, and promised he would not embarrass the team. Then he did exactly what he promised not to do—embarrassed the team.

I do not believe that Manziel is capable of being a franchise, or even NFL quality, starter. But even if was the 2nd coming of Otto Graham, I would not have drafted him because of his attitude. The problem is that he will never have the work ethic that it takes to become an NFL quality QB.

Just after he was drafted, he told the world that he would live his life the way he wanted. Then after playing in a couple of games including a shutout against the Bengals he admitted he did not take studying the play book seriously enough.

I applauded him for checking into a rehab clinic over the off season. But then we got to this week. Once again he proved that anyone that trusted him is a fool. Those that say he never got a chance are wrong. He got his chance and then decided that it was not important enough to stay in Cleveland and work on his craft. He has no one to blame but himself.

Will he ever get another chance? Probably because some coach will think he is the one that can get Manziel under control. That coach will be wrong. There is no fixing what is wrong with Manziel. If the game is not important enough to get him to focus on getting better, he will never be more than a “never was.” He might even get into a game or two with the Browns this year. The history of the team indicates that they go through 2 or 3 QBs each season.

I hope that Manziel will get his life together. Often a single rehab is not enough to solve an addiction. But regardless of what he does from this point on he should be traded or cut by the Browns. That would be the best thing for the team and a shock to Manziel that might get him to become serious about his play.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

Andy Dalton turns into a pumpkin after dark.

Dalton

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the week, and reviewed all week 10 games including the Browns/Steelers.

Admittedly the pumpkin reference was way too easy given the “Browns-lite” Bengal jerseys worn in the game against the Texans. But yet again Bengal QB Andy Dalton turned into a pumpkin after the sun went down. And this should not surprise anyone that listens to NNR or is a Bengal fan. We have seen it in every playoff disaster since he has been the starter.

Samantha and I thought it might happen in the Thursday game vs the Browns and there were signs but the Browns were so bad that no Dalton fold could have tipped the scales to the opponent.

The issue for the Texans was simple—Pressure Andy and good things will happen. They did and won the game behind a guy that had been their 3rd string QB until Ryan Mallet imploded. The Texan D pressured Andy and in perfect form Andy folded like a discount accordion. He only completed 57% of his throws for just 5.1 yards per attempt. But Dalton was not at all alone in folding after dark.

When the situation was critical after the Texans scored the only TD of the game, Dalton and his receivers caught the “yippes” at the same time. Dalton threw the ball right in the hands of TE Tyler Eifert but he could not hold on. The final blow came when Dalton hit is most reliable WR A.J. Green and he fumbled the ball ending the last chance for a Bengal win.

For all of those fans that thought or hoped that Dalton had changed I say “not so fast my friend.” The Bengals have continued to get better each year since making the playoffs. But without a playoff QB,

their chances of advancing in the playoffs are slim. You can’t change a tiger’s strips.

Thoughts on the 1st half of the NFL season.

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 9, and previewed all week 10 games including the Browns/Steelers.

AFC East

Patriots – No question Tom Brady is playing at a very high level. The question is will issues in the D backfield cost them a Super Bowl?

Bills – New coaching staff, solid D but the same old problem—No QB.

Jets – No question the D is one of the very best. They have the same issue as the Bills.

Dolphins – The team quit on their former coach and this team is headed for a total rework.

AFC North

Bengals – QB Andy Dalton has played very well but can they win a playoff game? No.

Steelers – Injuries have decimated this team but the D backfield has never been worse.

Ravens – The only thing that will save HC Harbaugh’s job is the super bowl win.

Browns – It is time to blow up the organization again. The sooner they fire GM Ray Farmer the better the 2016 draft will be.

AFC South

Colts – If things weren’t bad enough Andrew Luck is hurt. The D is pathetic and now the QB is 85 years old.

Texans – Once they stopped flipping coins to decide which QB to start the team has started to win. The D has always been solid. The Colts had better watch out.

Jaguars – Blake Bortles is playing well but needs more weapons. The D is a disaster and needs to be upgraded.

Titans – They drafted a QB and have 2 legitimate starters. They need to trade 1 to get more players.

AFC West

Broncos – Peyton Manning has fallen and he can’t get up. He is clearly not the QB he used to be. The D has saved them often but will not get him to a Super Bowl win.

Raiders – HC Jack Del Rio has this team headed in the right direction. He has a QB and a couple of receivers. One more good draft will make this team very dangerous.

Chiefs – It was clear that KC would struggle on O but the D has disintegrated as well. Maybe the pass rushers’ wallets are slowing them down.

Chargers – Any team that has rumors of moving out of town is bound to be hurt. Phillip Rivers has carried this team on his back for years. This year he is getting even less help than in the past.

NFC East

Giants – Eli Manning is struggling without a run game and an O line in flux. The D needs to generate more pressure on the opposing QB but the injury to JPP has made that unlikely.

Eagles – Chip Kelly has made some strange moves collecting 2 RBS and a QB with serious injury histories. The high speed O will kill the D unless they can make 1st downs and hold the ball.

Redskins – This team is a dumpster fire and yet they are looking down at the Cowboys. They have no QB and the run game has gone south. The D has never been good.

Cowboys – Jerry Jones has no one to blame but himself. He thought either Brandon Weeden or Matt Cassel could replace Tony Romo and keep the team winning. He was VERY wrong.

NFC North

Packers – The Panthers showed every team how to stop the Pack O—cover the receivers until the D line can sack the QB. The D has fallen off as well in the last 2 losses.

Vikings – The combination of Bridgewater and Peterson have the team in the hunt for a playoff spot. But the D is contributing by holding opponents to 17.5 ppg.

Bears – Cutler will be gone next year. Some coach will think they are the guy that can turn him into an superstar but they will be wrong.

Lions – “With the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select…”

NFC South

Panthers – Newton is playing OK but is not an MVP candidate completing just 53.7% with 14TDS but 9 interceptions. The D has been outstanding allowing 20.6 ppg.

Falcons – They were undefeated until the O played road kill. It has always been the D that did them in.

Saints – Brees is doing all he can but has to wonder who’s side the D is on. The DC is a big part of the problem.

Buccaneers – Winston is learning that the NFL is not like the ACC. He will get it but it will take a while. The D needs more players like LB David.

NFC West

Cardinals – This team is a time bomb waiting for Carson Palmer to get hurt again. As long as he is healthy this team is a Super Bowl contender.

Rams – Foles is not the answer at QB but neither was Bradford. They have the RB in Gurley and the D. All they need now is the QB and some bigger WRS.

Seahawks – Russel Wilson has been sacked 85 times in 8 games despite his mobility. The O line is killing their chances to get back to the Super Bowl. The D has also given up leads late in games.

49ers – Kaepernick will be gone at the end of the season. Some coach will think they are the guy that can turn him into a star and they will be right. Ownership will be sorry they let their HC and QB leave.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.
