Some thoughts about Week 16/17 NFL.

Week 16 NFL

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and previewed all of this week’s games including a detailed analysis of the Browns game.

Steelers pulled a “Buckeye” by not showing up against a Raven team with a defensive backfield that could not cover me running a pattern. What happened? They choked. If the Steelers get in the playoffs they will have fallen backwards across the goal line. They could be a force but not if they play like they did against the Ravens.

Chip Kelly is out and if you were surprised SHAME ON YOU for not listening to NNR. Samantha and I have been telling you for weeks that this was coming. It was well deserved. As a former coach myself I can say that anyone that makes player decisions based on who he likes will never succeed.

The NFL is about play makers and Kelly gave away the guys that had the best ability to make plays. It was also a HUGE mistake to try to force his system on players that did not fit it. A good coach adapts his system to … Read more at FryingPanSports

The Problems with Johnny Manziel.

After guiding the Browns to a win over the 49ers lots of people are thinking that Johnny Manziel may be the QB of the future that the Browns have been looking for since 1999. One thing that has to be considered is that the 49ers could not beat the Sisters of the Perpetually Miserable on a consistent basis. The SF O and D linemen should be bagging groceries at the local Piggly Wiggly.

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and reviewed all of this week’s games including a detailed analysis of the Browns game.

I am not among the group that feels he is an NFL starting quality player. But unlike most of the others, I am going to tell you why.

Manziel’s footwork is bad and he is not stepping into his throws. Way too often he throws flat footed. It is very hard to be accurate doing that. In addition he does not step into his throws. That also hurts his accuracy.

He is not consistent in his throwing platform. Even at his height he throws side armed. That will get a … Read more at FryingPanSports

Preview of Week 14 NFL Sunday games

SE-6 BA SE Wilson has been outstanding. He has a near perfect pass rating in the last 3 games.

7-5 4-8 Run game is solid with Rawls has been solid.

The key to the turnaround has been the D getting back to 2013 performance.

BA This year is lost for BA. They will be back in the playoff hunt next year when they get the injured players back.

Schaub threw 2 picks including a pick6 in a span of 20 seconds to spell the defeat at MI. He is a disaster looking for some place to happen. If he is hurt things will even get worse. What could be worse? How about starting Jimmy Clausen. Yes that would do it.

The D knew the pass D was bad but now it can’t stop the run game either.

AT CR-7.5 AT AT has fallen & can’t get up. After starting 5-0 they have lost 6 of their last 7 games. HC Dan Quinn has no … Read more at FryingPanSports

Did the Eagles show the NFL how to beat the Patriots?

Pats Eagles

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and reviewed all of this week’s games including a detailed analysis of the Browns game.

According to the “experts” the Eagles used a well proven system to beat the Patriots. It was the same game plan that the Giants used to beat New England in 2 Super Bowls. The Eagle D put pressure on Patriots QB Tom Brady. At the same time the defensive backs were staying close to the Pat receivers. That forced Brady to hold the ball just a little longer and contributed to 4 sacks.

That is all very nice BUT it had very little to do with the win. It really helped the Eagles that Brady lost all of his veteran receivers. The newbies were wearing “Hello, my name is” tags on their uniforms.

But that was not the key factor as well.

The newbies could not get any separation from the Eagle DBS. It was not so much that the backs did such a good job covering but it was that the WRS were not good enough to get open. But that was not … Read more at FryingPanSports

Austin Davis is the right QB to start this week.

BrnBen

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day and detailed the Browns loss to the Ravens including the details of the blocked field goal attempt.

Austin Davis has a 3 year deal and had more starts than Johnny Manziel. He is at the least a solid backup QB and at best perhaps a part time starter. He has an NFL arm but not a cannon. He sees the field and reads defenses fairly well. And the most significant advantage he has over Manziel is that he has not lied to the coaching staff.

The last statement is most significant. Even if Manziel was on the field a clone of Cam Newton the fact is that he can not be trusted to become the face of the franchise. Manziel has been coddled his entire life. That has resulted in an attitude that he can get away with almost anything including lying to the staff.

Often a person who goes into rehab is not able to sustain a clean life after resuming their lives. It often takes 3 or 4 trips to rehab to over come their addiction. When that person has been able … Read more at FryingPanSports

Joey Bosa is off my draft board.

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and previewed all of this week’s games including a detailed analysis of the Browns game.

Like most Ohio State fans, I was disappointed at the loss to the Spartans. But more than anything else I was shocked to see Joey Bosa fail to perform in the 1st big game of the season. For those of us that are draft-nicks, one thing that predicts failure in the NFL is failure in big games in college. A stiff can look good playing against the Sisters of the Perpetually Miserable. But how a player preforms against a big time opponent has always been an indicator of how that player would fair at the next level.

Bosa did nothing in the MSU game. That is all I needed to see to take him off my board. He might turn out to be a good or even great player. But I can not risk taking a player like that with a top 5 pick in the draft.

Samantha Bunten of NBC Sport and I wish each of you a wonderful Thanksgiving.
