Farmer Manziel Getting Drafted by Ray Farmer

Maziel Getting Drafted

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and previewed all of this week’s games including a detailed analysis of the Browns game.

It is my experience that when someone in the room thinks they are the smartest person there, they are not even in the running for that honor.

I think that is part of Browns GM Ray Farmer’s problem. He thinks he is smarter than the other NFL General Managers.

Ray was too busy to bother to go to the pro day of CB Justin Gilbert. If he had he might have over heard Gilbert tell a team scout that asked him to return some punts “watch the film.” That scout took Gilbert off his team’s board. Ray would have been more secure in his position to have done the same thing.

Ray was too busy to bother to go to the pro day of QB Johnny Manziel. If Ray had taken the time he might have found out about Manziel’s attitude about blow up swans, liquor and parties in front of people taking videos.

Gilbert has been a healthy scratch despite multiple injuries at the corner back position. Manziel was named the starter for the rest of year and became the 1st QB in my memory to lose the job in the bye week without taking a snap.

Not only is it time to sit him, I would have cut him. Of course as all of our regular readers know I never would have drafted him in the 1st place.

NFL Draft (2)

NOTE: Today on NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I talk about the possible undrafted free agents the Browns could sign and discuss some of the draft rumors floating around during “Silly Season.”

Then tonight on NNR I am joined by Ken Becks owner of http://www.1stdownscouting.com/ to talk our favorite players and what the Browns might do. The podcasts will be up on fryingpansports.com/radio-show .

There are two times when we hear people lie the most on TV. One is during a Presidential Election cycle. The other is the time leading up to the NFL Draft. Welcome to the “silly season.”

You can discount almost everything that most GM’s or head coaches say. They have no desire to let their fellow drafters or the public know what they are thinking. Usually after the draft, the fans wonder not what those in charge of their favorite team were thinking but if those drafting were capable of thought.

So don’t worry about what you hear. It won’t matter because they never do what they say. Exhibit A: the Browns spent $100K on a study to see which QB was most likely to succeed. The answer was Teddy Bridgewater. Then they moved up to draft Johnny Manziel.

So far I am not impressed with Johnny Manziel

Manziel Money

One of the 3 biggest questions I had about Johnny Manziel was is he willing to work hard enough to become the QB that his natural athleticism indicates he can be. So far, I am not impressed by that aspect of Manziel.

His actions as he was walking across the stage after being taken by the Browns concerned me. That is not the time to be doing the “show me the money” crap. The Browns clearly had issues with the way he was carrying himself by the “act like a backup” comment. But they should have known what they were getting when they picked him in the first round. Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.

This weekend we saw Johnny hanging out in Vegas with the broken Gronc. We saw the girls and the money sign again. He realized that he looked bad and posted a picture of his playbook tablet trying to make up for his bad PR. But that only made it worse.

Here is the bottom line. Manziel has a lot to learn. He is not as NFL ready as Teddy Bridgewater due to the O that Manziel played in. He will have to do the tape work necessary to become a successful QB. So far there is no indication he has the desire to do that. He seems to be more interested in being an Internet superstar rather than a football superstar.

The future of both the Browns and GM Ray Farmer depends upon Manziel becoming a quality starting QB. That is not the kind of bet that I would make if my job depended on it.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think.
