SF RB Hyde will not play vs TB
GB cb Sam Shields placed on IR & RB Lacy out with ankle surgery Pack placed him on IR out till wk 15

BF rb McCoy suffered a hamstring injury in practice Wed. Doubtful for Sunday
ba QB Joe Flacco may not play Sunday
OK Owner Davis said he will file paperwork to move to LV

NFL The league is working with the city of Oakland to get something done so Raiders don’t move.

Reunion Sunday

CH10 GB26 The WR issue has affected Rodgers He has the 35th ranked pass comp %
1-6 4-2 Hoyer broke his arm in the 2nd Q replaced by Barkley
Hoyer had thrown 200 passes this season without a pick.
If you can’t get open vs Chicago, you are a bad WR
Hoyer 4/11 49 00 Barkley 6/15 81 02 Carey 10/48 Miller 2c 40
Rodgers 39/56 326 30 Montgomery 9/60 Adams 13c 132 2TDs

3-3 3-3 NG pass game (3rd) vs LA pass D (16th)
London LA O (28th run & pass) vs NG D (22nd pass & 12th run)
The LA front office has a very warm seat. Goff was the wrong pick & LA paid a ton for him.
Signed k Gould to a deal he will go to London.

WA DT-1.5 WA O looks good on paper but QB Cousins gives the ball away too often & run game over rated.
4-2 3-3 WA pass game (5th) vs DT pass D (23rd)
DT pass game (14th) vs WA pass D (15th)

OK JK-1 HC DelRio needs to get his D working again. If not OK will not make the playoffs
4-2 2-3 OK passing game (10th) vs an improved JK pass D (8th)
JK pass game (18th) vs OK pass D (32nd)
OK is 32nd vs the pass and 30th vs the run. Del Rio is back in JK

NO KC-6.5 NO has the top pass game in the league. Too bad te D & run game are not at that level.
2-3 3-2 NO Pass game (1st) vs KC pass D (12th)
KC run game (14th) vs NO run D (26th)
KC needs to get the pass game up to the level of run game. Not likely to happen with Smith at QB.

BF-3 MI BF has won 4 straight games. If HC Ryan & coaching staff doesn’t screw things up BF might make the playoffs.
4-2 2-4 BF run game (1st) vs MI run D (31st)
MI pass game (23rd) vs BF Pass D (14th)
Not only is Tannehill on the hot seat, so is the entire coaching staff

BA NJ-1 The BA O is bad but at least Flacco doesn’t give the ball away like Fitzpatrick does.
3-3 1-5 BA O (P 16th R 18th) vs NJ D (P 28th, R 6th)
Ballanced NJ O (21st R&P) vs BA D (9th pass 1st Run)
If BA can get the O going, they should make the playoffs. NO chance for the Jets
Jets start Geno Smith at QB & NJ is favored?????

MN-2.5 PH MN is the only undefeated team & this is Braford’s shot at his former team.
5-0 3-2 Bradford & the MN pass game vs PH pass D (4th)
PH run game (8th) vs MN run D (4th)
Wentz is playing well but the loss of RT Lane will hurt the rest of the season.

IN TN-2.5 There will be a lot of HC opennings next season & IN will be 1 of them. TN might be open too.
2-4 3-3 TN run game (3rd) vs IN run D (25th)
Luck & IN pass game (13th) vs TN pass D (11th)
Dick LeBeau D will drive IN O line nuts!

SD AT-6.5 AT Offense looks great now but will the AT D hold up?
“2-4 4-2 AT pass game (2nd) vs SD pass D (24th)
Rivers & SD pass game (12th) vs AT pass D (26th)
SD has a vote on a new stadium. At 2 & 4 no chance it gets approved.

TB-2 SF Kaepernick is back but Hyde is out. HC Chip Kelly might not be back next year
2-3 1-5 Stinker game of the week
TB pass O (17th) vs SF pass D (7th only bevause it is so easy to run on SF.)
SF run game without Hyde (5th) vs TB run D (18th)
TB RB Rogers will be the main call carrier with both Martin & Sims hurt

NE-7 PT PT will start QB Landry Jones against a top AFC D.
5-1 4-2 Brady & NE pass game vs PT pass D (30th)
Bell & PT run game vs NE run D (9th)
NE looks like the AFC champ unless they have a lot of injuries.

SE AZ-2 Palmer is back but can AZ O line protect him vs SE pass rush?
4-1 3-3 SE pass game (11th) vs AZ pass D (3rd)
AZ run game (4th) vs SE run D (3rd)
SE has the same issues on O, Bad O line protecting Wilson & blocking for run game

HO DV-7 DV has lost 2 games in a row after starting 4-0 The O is the problem & Osweiler would not have helped.
4-2 4-2 Osweiler gets a chance to hurt his former team. But the DV pass rush will have a lot to say about that.
HO run game (10th) vs DV run D (22nd)
DV pass game (27th) vs HO pass D (2nd)

CL CN-10 Both of these teams are going down fast. CL it is the D. CN it is everything.
0-6 2-4 CN pass game (6th) vs CL pass D (27th)
CL run game (11th & falling like a rock off the side of a mountain) vs CN run D (20th)
CL is consistant on D. 27th against the run & pass
CN coaching staff is on the hot seat for the current record & not winning a playoff game since the 90s
CL HC Jackson goes back to CN where he coached last year

CN O Standard formation is 1 rb 1 te 3 WRS.
RV Dalton has improved his comp% each season. This year he is at 67.4
Yards per compl is down slightly from 8.4 last year to 8.1 in 16
Part of the decrease is due to CN allowing #2 & 3 WRs to leave in free agency.
AJ Green has 42 catches for 14.4 yards per catch
RB Bernard is 2nd in receptions with 29 but averages 8.8 yards per catch.
None of the RBs are averaging 4 yards per rush. CN has 4 TDs rushing.
Lots of O line split formations OTS wide to block on bubble screen passes.
TE Eifort has yet to play for CN. That has hurt CN O. He had 13 TDs last year
CN struggles to score TDs in the red zone. 4 plays from the 1yard line failed vs NE.

CN D Standard formation is 4/3 2 deep safeties vs NE but will go 8 in the box vs CL
Even in 3rd & 9+ CN uses nickel rather than dime D.
CN pass rush comes from DT Atkins & DES Dunlap & Johnson.
The key to CN D is the front 4 + Burfict

CL Injuries Both WR Pryor & CB Haden have not practiced all week and are questionable.

That’s what I think. Tell us what you think.

NFL Week 15

NFL Week 15

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and previewed all of this week’s games including a detailed analysis of the Browns game.

NEWS CL RB Raheem Mostert was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens.

WR Darius Jennings was waived.

ST David Hunn of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, NFL Com Roger Goodell is balking at the idea of providing the city with the necessary $300 million to aid in the local authority’s attempts to get that new stadium erected in St. Louis.

If you are in ST and hear someone talking about “the Donald” it has nothing to do with the election.

TB23 ST31 TB DT Donald was in the backfield as much as QB Winston. O line doubled & tripled him but couldn’t stop him.

6-8 6-8 Penetration allowed the other 10 to focus on the TB run.

D has been solid vs the run (8th) but struggled to stop Gurley.

Winston drove TB to 17 pts in the 4th quarter but fell 8 pts short.

ST The trade of Bradford for Foles has been a disaster for ST. It was 31st in ppg but put up 21 in the 1st half.

Despite turnovers by the O the D has been solid. 12th in ppg, 13th in pass ypg & 21st in rush ypg.

The D & Donald dominated TB.

NJ-3 DA NJ Fitzpatrick has been better than expected. He has NJ at 10th in ppg (25.0) & 12th in passing. 0 TOS in the 3 game win streak.

8-5 4-9 The D has been solid but not as good vs the pass as expected (19th). But it is still 10th in ppg.

DA Even when Romo was healthy the O was not that good. Without him it is 30th in ppg.

The D has been better than expected but lacks play makers at all 3 levels. It is 16th in ppg but 4th vs the pass.

KC-7 BA KC Smith is a limited QB. But he has been better in the red zone. KC is 8th in ppg but 27th in pass ypg.

8-5 4-9 The D started slowly due to the lack of pass rush. It has gotten much better now & is 4th in ppg & 8th in yards pg.

BA Without Flacco & Forsett the O has died. It has fallen to 20th in ppg & 25th in rush ypg.

The D has suffered a ton of injuries & no Suggs. It is 25th in ppg 7 21st in pass ypg.

HO IN HO Hoyer was decent but he is out. Now Yates plays QB in the biggest game of the year for HO.

6-7 6-7 HO is 25th in ppg but 15th in pass ypg.

The D seems to be back on track. It is now 13th in ppg 7th in yards pg & 3rd in pass ypg.

IN Hasselbeck should be back. If not 6-16 Whitehurst will start. Either way IN has no O. It is 21st in PPG & 26th in ypg.

The D stinks. When it gave up 51 pts vs JK, what else can you say?

AT-3 JK AT The AT O has flown south for the winter. The run game has been very inconsistent & WRS can’t seem to catch the ball.

6-7 5-8 Even so Ryan has AT at 7th in pass ypg.

The D has been better than expected. It is 14th in ppg & 17th in ypg.

JK Bortles has gotten better and has O at 9th in ppg & 14th in pass ypg.

The biggest issue is the D. It is 31st in ppg, 22nd in ypg but 13th against the run.

CH MN-5 CH HC Fox has a mess & it will take him a couple of drafts to get the team competitive.

5-8 8-5 Cutler has as much arm talent as any QB but a 5 cent head. CH is 22nd in ppg & 20th in pass ypg.

D has been better than last year & is 18th in ppg but 2nd in pass ypg.

MN Bridgewater is developing nicely but MN is a run 1st team. It is 5th in rushing but 26th in ppg.

The D has been nothing short of outstanding. It is 9th in ppg (19.6) & 8th in pass ypg.

TN NE-14 TN TN has lost 2 of the last 3 games. Things don’t get any better against NE.

3-10 11-2 Part of the problem has been Mariota. He has 19TDS but 10 picks. TN is 27th in ppg.

The D has struggled to kept teams out of the endzone (24th in ppg) but are 9th vs the pass.

NE Two recent losses has NE at 3rd in ppg (30.9) but 1st in pass ypg.

WRS, RBS & O line are all hurt. But as long as they have Brady, they will be OK.

The D is young but very good. It is 8th in ppg (19.5) 6th in ypg & 7th in pass ypg.

CR-5 NG CR CR is 1st in ppg (31.6) & 2nd in rush ypg but 25th in pass ypg.

13-0 6-7 When Wilson was in a run 1st O nobody talked about him as MVP but now Newton is a candidate.

The D is incredible. It is 5th in ppg (18.7) 3rd in ypg 5th vs pass & 4th vs run.

NG NG is a mystery. They played tough vs NE then rolled over against WA.

Eli Manning has 28 TDS & 10 picks with a QB rating of 96. NG is 7th in ppg & 6th in pass ypg.

The problem is no run game or D. D is 20th in ppg but 32nd in yards & vs the pass.

BF-1 WA BF Taylor has been solid. BF is 13th in ppg & 3rd in rushing. Taylor’s run threat has opened up the run lanes for RBS.

6-7 6-7 The D has been hurt by injuries including DT Williams but is still 15th in ppg & 14th vs the run.

WA Cousins has been OK with 18 TDS 11 picks & a pass rating of 93.2.

He has the O 17th in ppg & pass ypg.

The D has also been middle of the league at 17th in ppg & 16th vs the pass.

GB-3 OK GB Rodgers has better numbers than most expect. He has 28 TDS & 5 picks with a pass rating of 97.5.

9-4 6-7 Despite the 4 losses GB is still 12th in ppg (24.4) but 23rd in pass ypg. Run game is back with Lynch (8th).

D has kept teams out of the endzone & are 6th in ppg (18.8). It struggles vs the run giving up 116 ypg.

OK Carr has been good throwing 28TDS & 9 picks with a pass rating of 96.5.

He has had to carry the O with no run game (26th).

GB better find a way to block OLB Mack. He had 5 sacks last week.

DV-6 PT DV OK showed how to beat Osweiler & Co. Pressure Pressure Pressure. PT will do just that.

10-3 8-5 He has just 5 TDS but 3 picks. The run game is middle of the league (18th).

The D has been outstanding. 1st in ppg (17.3) yards & pass yards.

PT Nobody wants to face the O of PT. Roethlisberger has too many weapons to throw to & Williams at RB.

The O line has solidified giving him time to throw. O is 5th in ppg & pass yards 9th in rush yards.

The D is young but aggressive. 11th in ppg & 6th vs the run.

MI-1.5 SD MI The Campbell experiment is nearly over. MI will do a complete house cleaning at the end of the year.

5-8 3-10 Tannehill has not developed. The O is 24th in ppg & 22nd in pass yards.

The D is over paid & has under performed. Suh & Co is 30th vs the run & 26th in ppg.

SD Rivers vs the world. That is how he must feel. Nobody can catch or run the ball. O line is a sieve.

SD is 4th in pass ypg but 31st in rushing & 28th in ppg.

The D is pathetic. 27th in ppg, 24th in yards & 27th vs the run.

CN-4.5 SF CN McCarron is lucky to face SF. But he must take care of the ball to give CN any chance to succeed.

10-3 4-9 The D is solid. 2nd in ppg (17.6) but they are a little soft vs the pass (17th).

SF Gabbert is the guy but not much of a QB. He has a noodle for an arm, a bad O line & no WRS.

How bad is the run game? Kaepernick is 2nd on the team in rush yards & hasn’t played in 6 weeks.

The D allowed 24 pts to CL & is 27th vs the pass & 31st vs the run.

AZ-3.5 PH AZ As long as Palmer is healthy the O will be fine. It is 2nd in ppg (31.2) & 1st in yds.

11-2 6-7 The D is solid. 7th in ppg 4th in yards 5th vs the run.

PH The O has muddled through the season. Bradford is 21st in pass ypg & 14th in ppg.

The D has spent a lot of time on the field. But it has not been as bad as expected. 22nd in ppg 24th vs the pass.

CL SE-14 CL SE is the place a struggling O goes to die. RIP Johnny. Will this be the game in which Bowe breaks out?

3-10 8-5 Don’t expect another 100 y rushing game or a 200+ yard passing game.

The D will have nightmares of Wilson after the game.

SE Rawls is out so the game will depend more on the arm of Wilson than ever.

He has the team 6th in ppg & has had a near perfect pass rating in the last 5 games.

The D has come around. It is now 3rd in ppg 2nd in yards & rush ypg.

QB 3 Wilson, Russell 12/3 7 JACKSON, TARVARIS U/Min

Wilson opens up run lanes with his run threat but is best in the pocket throwing down field.

LWR 89 Baldwin, Doug CF11 16 Lockett, Tyler 15/3

RWR 15 Kearse, Jermaine CF12 17 Smith, Kevin SF14

TE 82 Willson, Luke 13/5 84 Helfet, Cooper CF12 85 McCoy, Anthony 10/6 86 Coffman, Chase SF15

Nobody knew Baldwin or Kearse before they got to SE & had Wilson throwing them the ball.

Lockett was drafted as a KR but has turned into a mini-mite down field WR.

Luke Wilson is an athletic TE with speed.

These guys are going to be a huge problem for CL DBS.

RB 36 Brown, Bryce SF15 22 JACKSON, FRED SF15 32 Michael, Christine 13/2 24 Lynch, Marshawn T/BUF

FB 46 TUKUAFU, WILL SF14 40 Coleman, Derrick SF12

Without Lynch & Rawls the run game is very suspect. But CL can’t stop any run game.

LT 76 Okung, Russell 10/1 78 Bailey, Alvin CF13

LG 68 Britt, Justin 14/2 78 Bailey, Alvin CF13 67 Sokoli, Kristjan 15/6

C 65 Lewis, Patrick P/Cle 61 Jeanpierre, Lemuel SF10

RG 64 Sweezy, JR 12/7 78 Bailey, Alvin CF13 63 Glowinski, Mark 15/4

RT 79 Gilliam, Garry CF14 78 Bailey, Alvin CF13

The O line has been better since Lewis was installed at C.

While it is still struggles to pass block Wilson can usually make time to throw.

Gilliam & Britt are the weak points of the O line.

LDE 72 BENNETT, MICHAEL U/TB 55 Clark, Frank 15/2 95 Dobbs, Demarcus W/SF

LDT 77 Rubin, Ahtyba U/Cle 99 Francis, AJ W/Mia

RDT 92 MEBANE, BRANDON 07/3 97 Hill, Jordan 13/3

RDE 56 Avril, Cliff U/Det 91 Marsh, Cassius 14/4

SE doesn’t blitz often because they get pressure out of the front 4.

Bennett, Clark & Avril are the best pass rushers. The D line plays the run very well.

LOLB 51 Irvin, Bruce 12/1 57 Morgan, Michael CF11

MLB 54 Wagner, Bobby 12/2 50 Wright, KJ 11/4 52 Coyle, Brock CF14

ROLB 50 Wright, KJ 11/4 58 Pierre-Louis, Kevin 14/4 47 Pinkins, Eric 14/6

The LBS are outstanding. Wright is very under rated as is Wagner.

Manziel will have trouble getting outside against the front 7 of SE.

LCB 25 Sherman, Richard 11/5 28 Burley, Marcus T/Ind

SS 31 Chancellor, Kam 10/5 35 Shead, DeShawn CF12 33 McCray, Kelcie T/KC

FS 29 Thomas, Earl 10/1 23 Terrell, Steven SF14

RCB 20 Lane, Jeremy 12/6

N-B 21 Smith, Tye 15/5

Sherman, Chancellor & Thomas are outstanding. Lane is OK but Smith is coming on as a rookie.

These guys are big and fast. The 4’2 WRS of CL will have trouble getting open or catching any passes.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

My thoughts on Week 8 games

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 8, and previewed all week 8 games including the Browns/Cards.

Lions & Chiefs at London

DT Stafford has been a disaster. O line & run game are worse. Can they score?

D has been stressed by TOS on O.

KC Smith has been bad and Reid in on the hot seat. The DT D should help both.

The pass rush as disappeared D backfield is better w Berry but without a rush it suffers.

Bucs at Falcons

TB Winston has been up & down as has the run game.

Lovie has to get more Tampa 2 players. He has just a few now.

AT AT O has disappeared. It will be back against TB. Ryan has to get WR White back.

D has been much better this year. It will give Winston fits.

Chargers at Ravens

SD Rivers has a pass rating of 99.2. 15TDS 7X. O line & lack of run game have been big issues.

TE Gates is back but not yet FB condition. He must help a weak rec corps.

D has struggled. Injuries are hurting the D.

BA Flacco has been bad & WRS have not helped.

Front 7 is good. Back 4 not so much. Rivers will be a problem.

Vikings at Bears

MN Birdgewater & Peterson have to deal with a bad O line but are solid. Wallace has to catch the ball.

D is 3rd in scoring but needs to take the ball away more. Cutler should help that.

CH Cutler is out at the end of the year. He has not be “in” for much of the season.

Fox needs a D but doesn’t have much of one now.

Titans at Texans

TN Mariota may start but no running game hurt and the O line is over paid and under performing.

D has struggled. DBS are weak but it is getting better.

HO Mallett is gone so no more coin flips but so is Foster. Hoyer needs some help.

D has under achieved. Watt triple teamed & no other pass rusher getting home.

Bengals at Steelers

CN Dalton has been great. PT has little pass rush so he should be fine.

D needs to kept the PT Run game under control. If so the game will be in Ben’s hands.

PT If he plays Big Ben will not be as mobile. W/o LT Beacham it will be hard.

DBS will be challenged by CN O. Can they cover TE Eifert?

This is a must win for PT if they want to get back in the playoff race.

49ers at Rams

SF Can Kaepernick survive the ST pass rush? He needs the run game to slow down the rush.

Pass rush has been inconsistent. Needs it to stop ST pass game.

TE Davis felt Kaep NEEDS to be more inclusive if he wants to be an effective leader.

ST Foles needs to improve. Run game is solid. Gurley is outstanding.

D should shred the SF O line. But can it stop the running game?

Jets at Raiders

NJ O has struggled at QB. Have to get run game going.

D is solid & deep. If they had a QB it would be a great team.

OK Carr is OK but needs protection. Murray is coming around as a RB.

D has some stars like Mack but need more. Best S Woodson is 96.

Seahawks at Cowboys

SE Worst O line in the league. Wilson deserves better. Run game getting better.

D has to stop giving up leads. In 4 losses Wilson & O has gotten a lead only to have D give it up.

DA Cassel proved 1 thing-He is no better than Weeden. Running game is spotty.

Collins R is starting at RG.

D has been a little better but in 4 straight losses has been on the field too much.

Packers at Broncos

GB Rodgers is the best QB in the league. Has lots of weapons & good RB in Lacy. O line is the only ?

D is 1st in scoring D. That is outstanding considering most teams are way behind against GB O.

DV Peyton is dead man walking. Is still able to do just enough to win. Can’t score enough to beat GB.

DV D is really good but gets burned by a precise passing game. Can be run against as well.

Cardinals at Browns

AZ Palmer is playing as well an anyone. Run game is OK when healthy. AZ is 4th on O.

D has been very good. They are 4th also on D.

CL Not sure if McCown can start. I have no desire to see Manziel and would prefer Davis.

Both Haden & Gipson should be back. That will help. But D has to stop the run.

Colts at Panthers

IN Luck has not been the same. He is not looking off safeties and looks nervous. I would be nervous too playing behind that O line.

Colt D has been BAD. Can’t stop the run or the pass. They are lucky to be in the AFC South.

CR Newton is doing it all without quality receivers or much of a running game. How much longer can he get it done alone?

CR D has been solid now that Kuechly is back. He and Davis are as good as it gets.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

The best news of the week was that Texans coach Gary Kubiak was back with the team.  He is a good guy and we hope he continues to have good health.

Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe was is facing possible drug charges.  According to league rules he is exempt from suspension until the legal case is adjudicated.

Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders was lost for the game and perhaps longer with a foot injury.

The end of the Patriots Panther game was another example of bad and gutless officiating in the NFL.  After seeing TE Rob Gronkowski tackled in the endzone the official closest to the foul threw a flag.  The officials waived it off and ran off the field like a bunch of girls that had shoplifted a sweater.

Having been an official I have a problem with that.  The call should have been either pass interference if the ball was catchable (it was only 4 yards from one of the biggest and most athletic receivers in the league) or defensive holding.  The prior would put the ball on the 1 with an untimed down.  The alternative would have moved the ball 5 yards closer and provided an untimed down.  At the very least the officials should have had the guts to explain to the team and the viewers at home why the flag was picked up.  That kind of action makes the league look like the games are fixed.  That is the one think that can destroy the legitimacy of the league.

ESPN reports that the Dolphins have asked for a delay in the hearing on Richie Incognito’s non-football injury grievance.

Ravens General Manager and Executive Vice President Ozzie Newsome was taken to the hospital during this week’s game at Chicago.  NFL.COM has reported that he is feeling fine and has returned to Baltimore.  We wish the Hall of Famer Newsome the best.

Notes:

Steelers 37 Lions 27 – The Steelers wore the Bumble Bee throw back uniforms which should be called throw up uniforms.  The Bees started hot throwing a couple of short passes which Antonio Brown took to the endzone to build a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with the no huddle O.  That was something that they had not shown before.  The Lions scored 27 second quarter points but did not score again.  The key play was a fake field goal attempt by the Lions in the pouring rain that failed.  In the 2nd half the Steelers increased the heat on Stafford.  Steeler QB Ben Roethlisberger ended up 29-43 for 367 yards and 4 TDs without a pick.  The Lions defensive line could not get much pressure on Roethlisberger only sacking him once.  Lions QB Matt Stafford did not have a good day in the winds of Hines Field.  He was only 19 of 46 with 2 TDs and 1 interception.  The Lions also lost 2 fumbles.  WR Calvin Johnson caught 6 for 179 yards and 2 TDs but did not have a catch in the 2nd half.

Raiders 28 Texans 23 – The Texans are done.  Neither their O or D played well.  They turned the ball over twice and the offense was so bad they benched Case Keenum (13-24 170-1-1) and brought Pick Six Matt Schaub (12-25-155-0-0) back in.  The Texans got an 87 yard TD on a punt return by Keshawn Martin but were -2 in turnovers.  Undrafted QB Matt McGloin threw three TDs in his first NFL start.  He was 18 for 32 for 197 with the 3 TDs and no interceptions.  The Texans took a 17-14 lead into the 3rd quarter but McGloin threw two of his TDs in the quarter.  The best the Texans could generate under Schaub was two field goals.  The Texans were able to convert only 2 of 16 3rd down attempts.

Bears 23 Ravens 20 OT – The Ravens had a 10-0 lead when the field was cleared for almost 2 hours due to heavy rain and lightening.  When the game resumed the Bears tied the game on a field goal and a pick 6 by David Bass.  The poor field reduced the pass rush of the Ravens.  However, it did not seem to slow down the Bears pass rush.  Baltimore QB Joe Flacco threw two picks and 1 TD.  He now has thrown 13 of each this season.  That combined with the hip injury to Ray Rice are the primary reasons the O has struggled in 2013.  Bears 2nd team QB Josh McCown did not.  The Ravens got the running game going with RB Rice gaining 131 yards and a 5.2 yard average.  He is looking healthier.  The Ravens got a field goal to tie the game with 3 seconds left but the Bears kicked a field goal in overtime to win.

Eagles 24 Redskins 16 – Eagles QB Nick Foles took advantage of a Redskin defense that is one of the worst in the league.  He threw for nearly 300 yards and led the Eagles to two TDs and ran a third in himself.  Under Foles the Eagle O does not come close to running the 80+ plays per game.  But unlike QB Mike Vick, Foles does not turn the ball over.  He has thrown 16 TDs and has yet to throw a pick.  While leading rusher LeSean McCoy was held to 77 yards he did score 2 TDs.

Redskin QB Robert Griffin threw an interception and lost a fumble under a lot of pressure from the Eagle D line.  RG3 never looked comfortable and the game was over before the Skins O got started.  Not only is he playing behind a patched up line he is without any quality receivers.

Bills 37 Jets 14 – Bills rookie QB E.J. Manuel outdueled Jets rookie Geno Smith to lead the Bills to a win at home.  Manuel was 20 of 28 for 242 yards and 2 TDs without an interception.  Smith was 8 for 23 for 103 yards and three interceptions without a TD.  He also fumbled twice but recovered one.  Smith has turned the ball over 20 times this season including 16 interceptions.  Smith was replaced by Matt Simms who did throw a TD pass.  The Bills jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the second quarter mostly from Smith’s turnovers and the Jets never recovered.  The Bills defense got 4 sacks and harassed Jet QBs all day.

Saints 23 49ers 20 – The Saints got a little home town officiating.  Late in the game the 49ers sacked Brees taking them out of field goal range.  But there was a flag for a hit to the head which wiped out the loss and added 15 yards.  Replay showed the hit was on the neck.  The kick was good which tied the game.  As time expired another field goal got the Saints the win.

The Saints D shut down the 49er running game.  49er QB Colin Kaepernick threw two TDs and the defense forced 3 turnovers.  He was chased all over the field and got sacked 3 times.  The 49er receivers did not get open.  The loss puts the team in danger of missing the playoffs.  They are now tied with the Cardinals at 6-4.  The passing game of the Saints prevailed.  QB Drew Brees threw for 300 yards and led the Saints to 2 touchdowns and three field goals for the win.  The Saints are a much better team at home than on the road.  At 8-2 the Saints need to keep winning to have any chance of catching the Seahawks.

Broncos 27 Chiefs 17 – The flaws of the Chiefs game were exposed against the Broncos.  The Chiefs do not have the offense to score enough to overcome a quality team.  They had build a 9-0 record against backup QBs on below average teams.  The Chief offense had not scored a TD in 6 quarters coming into the game.  That is not a formula for a championship.  The Broncos are a legitimate threat to go all the way to the Super Bowl ONLY if QB Payton Manning can stay healthy.

Bengals 41 Browns 20 – Four turnovers and two blocked punts did in the Browns chance to win.  When your fans give the team a standing ovation for getting a punt off, thing on special teams are bad. For the details of the game check out my Browns Bengals Live Game Notes on http://fryingpansports.com/.

Rumors:

The Steelers will face major cap space issues in part due to the big contract they gave Roethlisberger.  They are also getting old and brittle particularly on defense.  Look for the team to let some big name (and big salary) older players go including SS Troy Polamalu.  A trade of Roethlisberger is not likely because the cap hit would be over 12 million dollars.

Watching Vikings RB Adrian Peterson over the last few weeks I have to believe he is not healthy.  He does not have the burst or the jump step he has shown over his career.

With 6 weeks to go in the season it is time to look at those coaches on the hot seat.  The two that jump out are Jacksonville and Tampa Bay.  Both are very much in need of more wins to insure their return next season.

The Vikings, Falcons, Texans and Redskins share the Under-Achiever of the year award and the coaching staffs may be gone next season.  Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has an excuse due to the bounty that was paid for QB Griffin and the salary cap hit imposed by the NFL.  That excuse may not apply to GM Bruce Allen.  Both the trade and the errors that resulted in the penalty by the league were decisions made by Allen.

This week’s “Too smart for your own good” award:

Lions Coach Jim Schwartz wins the award for going for a fake field goal in the 4th quarter leading the Steelers by 4.  The attempt failed (as most of them do) and the Lions lost the game.

News:

QB Jay Cutler missed only 1 game (and the bye week) and returned to start for the Bears against  Detroit.  However, he was forced to leave the game with a possible ankle injury.

Titan QB Jake Locker suffered a Lisfranc injury early in the game against the Jaguars.  The team believes it will end his season.

Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder injured his left non-throwing shoulder in the game Thursday.  He is expected to miss some time.

Texan RB Adrian Foster has a bulging disk in his back.  It will require surgery which will end his season.

Packer backup QB Seneca Wallace left the game against the Eagles with a groin injury.  He was not playing very well with a healthy groin.  Scott Tolzien replaced him.  In his press conference after the game head Coach Mike McCarthy said that Tolzien would start next week.

49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree could return to the field soon.  He has been cleared to practice.

Future Hall of Fame S Ed Reed said after the last loss by the Texans that the team was out coached.  The team then released him.  Moral of the story–The truth may set you free but it does not guarantee employment.

Notes:

Seahawks 33 Falcons 10 – Despite a patchwork line the Hawks gave up only one sack.  The combination of passing by QB Russell Wilson (19-26-287 yards-2 TDs-0 interceptions) and the rushing of RB Marshawn Lynch (24-145-1TD) overwhelmed the depleted Falcon D.  The Hawks built a 23-3 half time lead then ran the ball in the second half.  The Falcon O ran the ball only 16 times for 64 yards.  The Falcons’ big FA addition RB Steven Jackson got just 11 yards on 9 carries.  That put the game in the hands of QB Matt Ryan.  He had a decent day going 23-36 with 1 TD and no picks but for only 172 gross yards.   The Hawk D held the Falcons to convert only 4 of 12 third down attempts.  The Hawks converted 9 of 15.  The Hawks scored 4 TDs and 4 FGs.  The only Falcon TD came with just 1 minute left in the 3rd quarter.

Panthers 10 49ers 9 – The O line of the 9ers is very over rated.  While they run block fairly well, QB Colin Kapernick was beaten down.  The Panther D got 6 sacks and more than a dozen hits on him.  The Panther D held the 9ers to just 151 yards and allowed just 2 of 13 third down conversions.  The 9ers allowed two long drives for a TD and a field goal.  The 9er O could do very little.  They had to settle for field goals in the first half and did not score after the intermission.  The 9ers also lost both safety Eric Reid and TE Vernon Davis. Both suffered concussions.  The Panthers proved they are for real at least on D.  The 49ers will go nowhere until they fix their O line.

Lions 21 Bears 19 – The Bears scored with 40 seconds left in the game.  They had two tries at a 2 point conversion to tie but both were unsuccessful.  Cutler started the game but was only 21-40 for 250 yards 1 TD and 1 pick.  He went out on the final drive due to an ankle issue.  Josh McCown came in and drove the Bears to the final TD.  The win put the Lions in first place in the NFC North.

Eagles 27 Packers 13 – In a battle of backup QBs, the Eagles showed more offense and defense than the Pack.  Eagle QB Nick Foles was outstanding again.  He was 12-18 for 228 yards with 3 TDs and no picks.  RB Leshawn McCoy ran for 155 yards on 25 attempts.  Tolzien was 24-39 for 280 yards with a TD but threw 2 picks.  It is clear that the Packers (5-4) are in deep trouble until QB Aaron Rodgers returns from a broken collarbone.  The win put the Eagles (5-5) back into the NFC East race.

Jaguars 29 Titans 27 – The Jags got their first win of the season.  The Titans had more passing yards, a better 3rd down conversion rate and fewer sacks allowed.  But they lost 3 fumbles and an interception.  One fumble was returned for a Jags TD.  Both Ryan Fitzpatrick and Locker lost a fumble.  So did RB Charles Johnson.  Fitzpatrick did pretty well going 22-33 for 264 and 2 TDs without an interception.  But the Jags build a 13-0 lead and the Titans could never catch up.

Steelers 23 Bills 10 – Bills QB EJ Manuel was back but looked very rusty.  He was 22-39 for just 155 yards with a TD and a pick.  The Bills could not get the O going in the air or on the ground.  They ran for just 95 yards.  They scored their only TD with only 3 seconds left in the game.  Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger was not much better throwing for just 204 yards with a TD and a pick as well.  The Steelers won by taking advantage of better field position and a 37 yard punt return.  Neither of these teams is going anywhere this season.

Ravens 20 Bengals 17 – The story of this game was in the last few seconds and overtime.  On the last play of regulation Bengal QB Andy Dalton threw a 51 yard Hail Mary.  Rather than knocking it down, a Raven DB tipped it up in the air and A.J. Green caught it for the score.  In overtime the Ravens stopped the Bengals and drove for a winning FG.  Both teams were busy all day giving the ball away.  They each committed 3 turnovers.

Rumors:

I have never coached at the NFL level.  As a coach I never allowed rookie hazing.  But my years of experience at the semi-pro level leads me to believe that a guy like Jonathan Martin would not have lasted a week on my teams.  If he did not have enough guts to stand up against a team mate, how could he be expected to stand up under the pressure of a big game?  The answer is he will not.  Because the team is only as strong as the weakest link, the team can’t allow someone like Martin to play.

The Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin uproar will end the jobs of both Dolphins coach Joe Philbin and GM Jeff Ireland.  Philbin will be fired because he should have known about the situation and should have stopped it.  Ireland will be fired for wasting a high second round pick on a mentally weak O lineman like Martin.

There was a rumor that Roethlisberger was irritated by the Steelers poor line play and had asked for a trade.  First it is doubtful that a team would take on his salary at his age with his history of injury.  Second there is no indication that he has asked for a trade.

Several coaches are on the hot seat.  The Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is one of the latest rumored to be in jeopardy of losing his job.  But he is not the one that drafted badly for so many years.  Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert is the one that should be fired.  I outlined his draft failings earlier this year.  Check out my editorial http://fryingpansports.com/steelers-fall-far-fast/.

That’s what I think.  Tell me what you think.

Note:  Join us for the live version of NNR Mondays and Fridays on The Bill Smith Radio Show. The Monday show with co-host Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports reviews the NFL week and Browns game.  The Friday show includes Samantha and Tony Williams Giants beat writer for Metro New York and previews the weekend games.

News:

Texan QB Matt Schaub was hurt and could be out next week.  The team also lost SS Danieal Manning with a broken Fibula.  He will be out 6-8 weeks.

The Packers lost WRs James Jones and Randal Cobb with knee injuries.  They also lost LB Nick Perry with a broken foot.

Pats WR Danny Amendola suffered a concussion.  CB Aqib Talib hurt a hip and LB Jerod Mayo suffered a shoulder injury.

The Cowboys RB Demarco Murray hurt a knee and DE Demarcus Ware will miss several weeks with a quad injury.

The Vikings have lost LB Desmond Bishop for the season with a torn ACL.

The Bills signed former Raider QB Matt Flynn.

The Steelers have placed OT Levi Brown on IR.  The team traded for him on Oct. 2 and he never played a game for them.  He injured his tricepts in pregame warm-up.  This is just one more example of the questionable moves by team management.  Brown has had a history of injury.  Check out my analysis of the Steelers drafts “Why did the Steelers fall so far so fast?”

Notes:

Patriots 30 Saints 27 – The key to this game was a brain cramp by DC Rob Ryan.  With 10 seconds left Ryan decided to not double the receivers in the endzone.  There was 1 on 1 coverage on WR Kenbrell Thompkins and QB Tom Brady hit him for the game winner with 5 seconds left.

Rams 38 Texans 13 – Those that wanted someone else (anyone else?) to play QB for the Texans got their wish.  But only after the Rams had built a 31-6 lead was starting QB Matt Schaub hurt.  T.J. Yates came in and promptly threw a 98 yard pick 6 to Alec Ogletree.  The Texans were never in the game and looked like a team that has given up.  They had 95 yards in penalties and gave the ball away 4 times.

Eagles 31 Buccaneers 20 – Eagle QB Nick Foles was extremely effective and efficient.  He ended up 22 for 31 for 296 yards and 3 TDs without a pick.  He also ran for a TD.  HC Chip Kelly has backed off his plan for 80+ plays a game at least with his backup starting.  The Eagles had only 65 offensive plays.  Bucs QB Mike Glennon played pretty well going 26-43 for 273 and 2 TDs and 1 interception.  The Bucs simply were overmatched by the Eagles speed and efficiency on offense.

Chiefs 24 Raiders 7 – Raider QB Terrelle Pryor was running for his life all afternoon.  He was sacked 10 times behind the patchwork line.  The pressure was unrelenting and forced 3 interceptions as well.  Chiefs QB Alex Smith was only 14-31 for 128 yards without a TD or a pick.  The Raider D is playing very well but the injury plagued O line was the culprit for the loss.  The line could not protect Pryor or block to get the running game going.

Bengals 27 Bills 24 OT – The Bengals built a 24-10 lead going into the 4th quarter and then tried to hang on for the win.  But new Bills starting QB Thad Lewis threw two long TDs to tie the game including a 40 yard TD with just 1:08 left.  He ended up with 19 for 32 for 216 yards and 2 TDs but no picks and 1 fumble lost.  The comeback took a lot of effort and the Bills just did not have enough left to get over the hump in OT.

Packers 19 Ravens 17 – The Raven running game disappeared and it was up to QB Joe Flacco to carry the O.  He failed.  The running game generated 47 yards in 22 attempts.  Flacco was sacked 5 times and converted only 2 of 14 third down attempts.  The Pack was up 16-3 going into the 4th quarter but the Ravens scored 2 late TDs including the last one with 2:04 left in the game.  The Pack found a running game with rookie RB Eddie Lacy gaining 120 yards on 23 carries.  QB Aaron Rodgers was 17-32 for 315 yards with a TD and a pick.

Panthers 35 Vikings 10 – Expect the Matt Cassel experiment to be over soon in Minnesota.  The Vikings were never in the game.  The Vike D made Panther QB Cam Newton look like a Hall of Famer.  Newton was 20-26 for 242 and 3 touchdowns without an interception.  Cassel was 32-44 but threw 2 picks.  The running game was understandably down.  Adrian Peterson had 10 carries for 62 yards but got 31 on a single carry.  The Vikes never got the O going.  The Panther D had something to do with that but most of the problem was inconsistency of the Vike O.  They scored their one TD with 1:00 left in the game.

Seahawks 20 Titans 13 – This gets the weird game of the week award.  The only TD that the Titans scored was on a return of a blocked FG.  Seahawk QB Russell Wilson drove the team down to the Titan 2 with 2 seconds left.  But their FG kicker was hurt.  The punter Jon Ryan tried to kick a FG but the new holder dropped the ball and tried to throw it.  The ball went backward and Jason McCourty ran it 77 yards for the TD.  Titan QB Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 2 interceptions but the Seahawks fumbled twice including the botched FG.  Wilson was 23 for 31 for 257 with no TDs or picks.

Lions 31 Browns 17 – The Browns led at halftime 17-7.  Then the Lions scored 24 straight points aided by a QB Brandon Weeden meltdown.  For my opinion about the game check out my live game notes on fryingpansports.com.

Rumors:

After watching the Eagles with both Michael Vick and Nick Foles, it is clear to me that Foles should be the QB going forward.  Vick is on a one year contract and has only completed a 16 game season once since returning from his stint as a guest of the state for dog fighting.  Foles is young, talented and more accurate passing than Vick because his mechanics are stable.  Even after years behind center, Vick’s mechanics are never consistent.

With the announcement that Brandon Weeden will remain at QB for the Browns it is clear to me that upper management wants to tank the season for a higher draft choice.  It is hard to watch Weeden play.  A good coach can correct inaccuracy due to mechanics or footwork.  A good coach can correct a flawed throwing motion.  There is no hope for a QB that wets his pants every time he gets rushed.  If the team wanted to win they would (1) bench Weeden, (2) start Jason Campbell and (3) sign a young QB free agent.  I would like to see the team sign Tyler Wilson off the Raiders practice squad.  Going into the 2012 college season he was considered a first round pick.  Arkansas had a horrendous season due to a change in head coach and lack of talent around Wilson.  He has well above average arm strength, is accurate even when getting hit and has experience behind a less than optimal offensive line.

The biggest impact that the Browns decision to keep starting Weeden may be their inability to keep their own free agents and sign those from other teams.  No quality NFL player wants to play for an organization that is willing to tank a season for a draft pick.  C Alex Mack, S T.J. Ward and LB Craig Robertson will be free agents at the end of this season.

The Chargers showed other teams the formula for beating QB Andrew Luck and the Colts.  The Bolts held the ball for 38:31 and scored on 5 possessions.  They also held the Colts to 2 of 10 3rd down conversion attempts.

There are a bunch of trade rumors floating around.  Last season the trading deadline would have been 4PM EDT today.  This year it was moved back 2 weeks.  The majority of rumors are about the bottom feeders trading players for 2014 draft choices.  There are usually few deals done around the trading deadline.  But with so many injuries around the league this year for teams in contention, 2013 could be the exception.

After week 6 it is time to look at the coaches on the hot seat.

Bucs HC Greg Schiano has irritated the other coaches, his players and this season is 0-6.  He is dead man walking.

Texans HC Gary Kubiak is on the hot seat with his team at 2-4.  The struggles of Schaub should put team management on the hot seat as well.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin has 2 super bowl wins but with the team at 0-6 the heat is on.  Despite injuries the team has not won this year and has not been a factor in the NFC East in the last couple of seasons.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has struggled this year.  The issue is not coaching.  The problem is the lack of quality draft choices.  GM Kevin Colbert is the guy that should go.

Atlanta coach Mike Smith is on the hot seat but should not be.  The injuries combined with a lack of depth have caused the team to go 1-4.  He should survive and coach next year.

Jaguars coach Gus Bradley is in his first year but the team has been bad.  He is likely to stay but will be on shaky ground next season.  He is not a very good head coach.

That’s what I think.  Tell me what you think.
