Cavs don’t need a stinking Defense, they have it now!

NOTE:  On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the NFL news of the day and a current topic of interest on fryingpansports.com/radio-show.

During the 2 games in Cleveland the Fans were chanting “Defense-Defense.”  The players looked at each other wondering what Defense was.

Defense has been missing all season.  While the regular season is one thing, it will be difficult in the playoffs for the Cavs to win with a D that ranked 20th overall.  Playoff games are half court affairs that depend on Defense, rebounding and free throws as much as anything.  Cavs fans had hoped that the team would “flip a D switch” and become the type of squad they were last year when they ranked 4th in points allowed.  That defensive effort helped them win the title last season.

The problem is the team does not have enough defensive players.  They signed a rim protector (Andrew Bogit) but he lasted just 53 seconds before he was hurt.  James is a solid defender but that is about all the Cavs have.  JR Smith is no longer a factor on D and Shumpert is no factor on either end of the floor.

While the D has been a problem, the offense has also been an issue.  The team has allowed teams to get back in the game all season long.  In the playoffs so far in 2017, the Cavs gave up leads of 10 in game one and 19 in game two against a very average Pacers team.  The O issue has been shot selection and cold spells particularly shooting 3 point shots.

The Cavs won both games but struggled in the 4th quarter to hold on.  The “Big three” have played way too many minutes.  For a first-round game that is not a positive.  Those minutes will wear them down in later rounds.

That is what I think.  Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

Cav Crowd

NOTE: Congratulations to LeBron James and the Cavs for a great effort in the finals. No one would have guessed that they would be competitive without 3 of their best 5 players. Tomorrow on NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discuss Game 6 of the finals and the future of the Cavs.

Despite the injures to Kyrie Irving (21.7 points per game), Kevin Love (16.4) and Anderson Varejao (9.6) the Cavs came within 1 point of winning the title.

Game 1 came down to a last second possession by the Cavs to win the game in regulation. But if they had made 1 more missed free throw, they would have had a 1 point lead and could have just held the ball to win. Another possibility would have been if the refs had not decided to call traveling for the 1st time all game on Timofey Mozgov in the previous possession. While Irving was hurt in OT, the Cavs would have won the title with that game 1 win with or without their starting point guard.

The Cavs went on to win Game 2 in Oakland and Game 3 in Cleveland. Since the format of the finals was changed to 2-2-1-1-1 no team has ever come back from 0-3 to win a title. In my opinion the Cavs would have won game 4 because the Warriors had no starter with finals experience. I think that if the Cavs had gone up 3-0 the Warriors would have folded without much of a fight.

Even if the Warriors had won game 4, the Cavs would have ended their misery in game 5 or 6.

Given the injuries, the Cavs had a great season and playoffs. All Cavs fans can be proud of the team. The fans should also be proud of the energy and noise they caused all season long.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

Kevin Love

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I analyzed the depth chart of the Browns. There will be no shows until Thursday the 28th. Paul Banks of the Washington Times will be my guest to talk Browns and Cavs. On the 29th Samantha and I will talk about which teams have done the best and the worst with both Free Agency and the draft.

I fully expect to see the picture of Kevin Love on milk cartons soon. He has not been on the bench watching his team struggle to a 3-0 advantage over the Hawks. We assume he has been busy rehabbing the injury.

However, his absence says a lot about the chances he will stay with the Cavs or move on. If he can not be bothered to watch the team try to win him a ring what chance is there that if he gets one he will resign with the Cavs? The answer is clearly not much of a chance we will see him in a Cavs uniform next year.

There are 3 critical questions we have to ask here. First, is there a better chance Love returns if the team wins a ring or if they don’t? I suspect that if he gets a ring he is gone next season. If the Cavs fall short, he could see the team as his best route to a ring in the near future.

Next, will the relationship between Love and LeBron James improve to the point he wants to stay or will be another incentive for him to leave? While we have not heard much recently (in part because Love has been absent) the relationship between two of the “big 3” will be a major factor in Love’s decision.

Last, what will ownership think of a GM that spent 2 #1 picks plus a 1st round pick in 2015 to “rent” Love for 1 year? While Anthony Bennett still looks like a bust, Andrew Wiggins looks like a quality player. General Manager David Griffin could well be on the hot seat. No question that Griffin did a great job getting J.R. Smith and some of the other parts of the team. But some say Griffin gave too much for C Timofey Mozgov (2 first round picks). If Love leaves, Griffin could be in serious trouble.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

LeBron (2)

Note: On NNR today David Kay of thesportsbank and walterfootball & I discussed the Cavs and NBA in detail. The podcast is on http://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/.

David agreed that despite the slow start, the Cavs will be just fine. That is not to say that the team is without issues. However, Coach Blatt and the Cavs will work out the rolls of each player.

To begin with SG Dion Waiters needs to buy into his job as primary scorer off the bench. He has been the 2nd option with the Cavs but now is the 6th man. With the addition of Kevin Love, PF Tristan Thompson has to adjust to being on the bench at the start of the game as well. While he seems to get it Waiters seems to be resisting the idea.

There are other issues as well. One that will not be solved any time soon is the lack of a true big man at C. The Cavs brought in Brendan Haywood but so far that has not solved the problem. A second issue has been the 2nd unit’s inability to maintain the leads that the starters created. That should lessen over time as the rolls of the 2nd unit become more defined. If the unit is not able to correct the problem there will be changes on the roster.

But the Cavs will make the playoffs and likely be in the Eastern Conference finals. And I would not pick anyone in the league to carry the team to the finals more than LeBron James.

LeBron

Browns Season Simulation Monday on NNR. Please join us at 6 PM EDT on or http://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/.

Make no mistake about it. LeBron James is testing his new GM David Griffin to get Kevin Love. If Griffin fails the test LeBron “could” consider opting out after his first or second year. That does not mean he will leave Cleveland, but it does mean that this test will determine if Griffin is still the GM in 2015-16 season.

There is no question that LeBron coming back to the Cavs is the best news Cleveland sports fans have had since the Browns drafted Jim Brown. In my opinion Love will not sign a long term deal with any team except the Cavs. Like Cavs fans, Love is sick to death of losing and wants to win. The best chance to do that is in Cleveland with LeBron and Kyrie Irving.

If teams see Love as a rental, his trade value will decrease significantly. For example Golden State is not likely to give up SG Klay Thompson to get Love for a year. But the question is will the Cavs be willing to wait to make a deal for Love?

I believe that by waiting, the Cavs can get Love for a deal that does not include Andrew Wiggins. The pressure to do something with Love will grow on the Timberkitties as the days pass. He will walk away at the end of the season and the team gets nothing for him. Since he is their only valuable asset, they can not afford to let him walk.

However, I do not think Griffin can stand the heat and he will make a deal that includes Wiggins. While that is not a bad deal, the Cavs need to prove to LeBron that they are willing to do what is necessary to get him the help he wants. He left in 2010 because the team was unable to bring in talent to help him win. What many Cav fans do not know is LeBron did his best to try to recruit talent to join him in Cleveland prior to the decision. He is now working hard to get Love to join him.

Another question is can new head coach David Blatt find a way to utilize a big man? I suspect he will. Mike “Mr. Potatohead” Brown never could figure out how to use one.

The last question is can the Cavs win a title with LeBron, Love and Irving? I believe they can. Will Wiggins develop? Yes but the question is how many more games will the Cavs win next season with Love? LeBron is testing Griffin and the Cavs. The team had better pass.

NNR

Monday on NNR we will present the results of my Browns Season Simulation. Please join us at 6 PM EDT on or http://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/.

News:

Saints TE Jimmy Graham got his money. He is a first round pick in any fantasy draft.

Browns WR Josh Gordon did not help his cause with a 2nd legal issue since he appealed his indefinite suspension. Both issues show he has major issues. After failing a test for weed, he was caught speeding with a friend smoking pot. Then he was arrested for DUI. At this point I doubt he can stay clean for a year to qualify for reinstatement. He may never play again.

49er RT Alex Boone says he won’t attend training camp unless he gets a new deal. The way he played in 2013 he should be more than happy with his salary. He missed way too many blocks to get a raise.

Flying J/Pilot President Jimmy Haslam signed an agreement with the fed. It will cost the company 92 million dollars. All Browns fans should buy as much gas as possible because Haslam needs the money.

Panthers DE Greg Hardy was found guilty of assaulting a female and communicating threats. It is likely he won’t suspended any time soon. He has filed an appeal of the conviction and it is doubtful that the appeal will be heard before the end of the season.

The Cowboys cut backup QB Kyle Orton. That allowed him to keep the 3 million dollar portion of his signing bonus. The upside for the Boys is a 3 million dollar cap savings. The down side is that former Browns QB Brandon Weeden will now backup Tony Romo who is recovering from 2 back surgeries this off season.

Notes:

The Broncos want to resign TE Julius Thomas but not at Graham money. Thomas profited greatly from having Payton Manning at QB. Thomas is not at all close to Graham in talent and would be average on most teams.

USC has done the right thing for its football players. Nearly all schools grant scholarships a year at a time. If a player gets injured or wants to quit football, the scholarship is not continued. USC has changed its policy to grant 4 year scholarships that are guaranteed regardless of the player’s status.

Rumors:

Most people believe that Haslam is safe from prosecution. For my opinion check out my editorial “What does the Pilot/Flying J settlement mean to the Browns?” on http://fryingpansports.com/#5yjPTbKkRpqXMmsO.99

The rumor is that the Panthers might cut Greg Hardy but don’t believe it. He is way too talented to cut and the team needs the D because the offense is hobbled by a lack of quality receivers.

Despite what WR A.J. Green thinks, the Bengals are not likely to give QB Andy Dalton a big dollar extension any time soon. The team is concerned about his inability to win playoff games. He threw 1 TD with 7 interceptions in his 3 playoff losses.

Cowboy backup QB Weeden has looked good in OTA drills. But when he is pressured by a D line, he falls apart.

The Timberkitties are insisting on any trade with the Cavs for Kevin Love including Andrew Wiggins the 2014 overall 1st pick. LeBron James wants Love and the Cavs will probably give in. If they were willing to wait the pressure on Minnesota will grow exponentially. The value of Love will decrease with each passing day. No team is willing to give their top star for a 1 season rental.

Love can facilitate the deal if he said publicly he would only sign an extension with the Cavs. If he did the Timberkitties would probably settle for PF Tristan Thompson, SG Dion Waiters and a 1st round pick or 2.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.
