NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and previewed all of this week’s games including a detailed analysis of the Browns game.

SE-6 BA SE Wilson has been outstanding. He has a near perfect pass rating in the last 3 games.

7-5 4-8 Run game is solid with Rawls has been solid.

The key to the turnaround has been the D getting back to 2013 performance.

BA This year is lost for BA. They will be back in the playoff hunt next year when they get the injured players back.

Schaub threw 2 picks including a pick6 in a span of 20 seconds to spell the defeat at MI. He is a disaster looking for some place to happen. If he is hurt things will even get worse. What could be worse? How about starting Jimmy Clausen. Yes that would do it.

The D knew the pass D was bad but now it can’t stop the run game either.

AT CR-7.5 AT AT has fallen & can’t get up. After starting 5-0 they have lost 6 of their last 7 games. HC Dan Quinn has no answers.

6-6 12-0 Ryan has thrown 9 picks & lost 2 fumbles in those games. That has to stop. He is having the worst season since his rookie year.

2 weeks ago AT D was #1 vs the run. It is now 12th. The problem has been missed tackles.

CR Newton has had a good year BUT he is not an MVP candidate IMO. He plays in the NFC South. The O line has gotten better. Run game is solid.

HC Ron Rivera has put his stamp on the D. It is aggressive and solid at all 3 levels.

The D backfield has a tough day vs NO but a lot of teams do vs Brees. Ryan will have a hard time find open WRS.

WA CH-3 WA After a tough loss against DA, WA gets a CH team that is also 5-7. The difference is CH is not in the running for a division title. Don’t you love the NFC Least?

5-7 5-7 Cousins is not a NFL starter & WA knows that. But he is not RG3 or Colt McCoy & that makes him the starter.

WA can’t get the run game going. Usually they are near the top of the NFL but this year they are 26th.

The D has never been good but is doing a little better this year. They are 17th in ppg & 10th in pass yards.

CH Cutler has been—well Cutler. He has 14 TDS & 7 picks with 3 fumbles lost. He is 20th in passing.

Forte has led the run game but due to a bad O line neither of the top 2 RBS average 4 yards per carry. CH is still 11th in rush yards.

The D can’t stop the run. It is 29th allowing 128y per game. It is better vs the pass because no team bothers to throw.

Big plays have been the largest issue.

PT CN-3 PT PT needs to keep winning to have any shot at the playoffs. Roethlisberger has been below average throwing 15 TDS but 9 picks. Last year he had 32 TDS & 9 picks.

7-5 10-2 PT has outstanding WRS. Brown, Bryant & Wheaton all have speed & hands. TE Heath Miller is solid as well.

D is great vs the run (6th) but horrible vs the pass (29th 275ypg). That is something that CN will exploit.

CN Dalton is the reverse vampire. He is great in the sunshine but turns to dust at night. CN is 4th in ppg & 12th in pass ypg.

The Run game has helped as well. It is 9th in the league using the 2 headed monster Bernard & Hill. Hill has a habit of putting the ball on the ground.

The D backfield will have to play at a high level. That is not likely to happen. Jones is out & Hall is ?.

D has been outstanding. 1St in ppg (16.1) 10th in ypg. DT Atkins & LB Burfict are healthy & that has been the difference.

In the past CN would have lost a trap game but CN has avoided that this year. They are 1st in the AFC playoff standings going into this week.

IN JK pk IN IN was humiliated last week by PT 45-10. Pagano is on a white hot seat as HC. He needs to get into the playoffs.

6-6 4-8 Luck is out & Hasselbeck was beaten up by PT last week. He is questionable this week. If he is out the QB is Whitehurst—Not good.

The run game is 27th (thanks to Gore at RB) & the D is very giving—allowing 25.4 ppg (26th). It was not helped by injuries & Luck’s picks.

JK The O has been OK (16th in ppg & 14th in pass ypg). Bortles has 27 TDS 13 picks & a pass rating of 86.6.

The problem is the D. It is 30th in ppg (28.4). It allowed Maroita to throw for 268 yards & 3 touchdowns & run 87 yards for a TD against the blitz.

With a new owner there is a lot of heat on the coaching staff & GM to get it turned around quickly.

SD KC-10 SD It is reported that GM Telesco given a 2 yr extension in Aug. HC McCoy will not be back if the team is selected to move to LA.

3-9 7-5 Telesco is a moron picking players. Very Good QB but no O line & few targets. Rivers has carried the team on his back all season.

SD is 4th in passing ypg but 30th in rushing. Rivers has 23TDS 9 picks & a 97.1 pass rating. Yeldon looks like another Alabama Bust at RB.

There is no D in SD. It is 29th in ppg (27).

KC Even OK chased Smith around. The O line has badly hurt the team. He needs a good O line to be effective.

Smith has thrown 14 TDS & 3 picks with a pass rating of 96.3. He has a noodle arm but is accurate with short passes.

LB Houston is questionable. D backfield had 3 picks by putting pressure on Carr last week. Houston would help a lot.

TN NJ-7 TN Mariota got the win last week with his 87y TD run. But TN needs a run game. RB McCluster has been out & no body else stepped up.

3-9 7-5 Mariota has been a bit of a disappointment. TN is 26th in ppg (20.4) & 25th in pass ypg.

The D is getting better. If LeBeau stays it will be really good next year. 21St ppg but 8th in total yards & 9th in pass ypg.

NJ NJ is barely hanging on to a playoff wild card. They need to win to stay in the 6th spot.

In the last 3 losses (OK, HO & BF) they played down to the competition. If they want a playoff spot that has to stop.

Fitzpatrick lacks a solid run game because of injuries to McCoy. Fitz has 22 TDS & 11 picks with a pass rating of 88.1.

Pass D is hurt by the loss of Revis but he may be back. It is 18th in pass ypg but 1st against the run. It is 11th in ppg.

BF-1 PH BF Taylor is making a case that he is the QB of the future. He has 17 TDS & 4 picks with a pass rating of 104.3. He has run for 3 TDS.

6-6 5-7 Taylor’s running threat has made the RB life easier. McCoy avg 4.6 & Karlos Williams avg 5.7.

McCoy will be a big factor having been a former Eagle.

D has been a disappointment. It is 16th in ppg 23rd in pass ypg & 14th in run ypg.

PH The Kelly O is not working. It is 15th in ppg, 19th in pass ypg & 12th in run ypg. QBS have 17 TDS but 14 picks.

The fast O has lead to a dead D. PH is 25th in ppg, 24th in pass ypg & 27th in run ypg.

They need to have someone spy on Taylor to prevent 3rd down runs.

Despite a 5-7 record, PH is tied for 1st in the NFC Least.

DT ST pk DT Everyone in DT is nervous for good reason. The Pres & GM were both fired. A consultant is in to help ownership find replacements.

4-8 4-8 Even at 4-8 DT is playing hard. The loss to GB Thursday was a heart breaker.

Stinker Stafford has been decent 22 TDS 12 picks & a pass rating of 91.1. He has had to do it without a run game (31st).

D yardage stats look good but it is 28th in ppg. They give up too many big plays & poor red zone D.

ST HC Fisher is rearranging the deck chairs. He fired the OC & replaced him with Rob Boras. But with Foles at QB that is a band aid for a lost limb.

O is 31st in ppg, & 32nd in pass ypg. That is due to bad QB play. Gurley has been held in check because there is no air threat.

D is 13th in ppg, but 23rd in rush ypg. The D line is solid but LBS struggle to stop the run.

NO TB-3.5 NO There is a chill in NO headquarters. They will all be gone at the end of the season.

4-8 6-6 Brees has been solid. 23 TDS 11 picks & a pass rating of 96.6. He has no help at WR, TE or RB.

The D is still horrid. 32Nd in ppg, yds, & rush ypg. & 31st in pass ypg.

TB Winston is getting better every week. The best news is he has not shoplifted any crab legs.

TB is 18th in ppg, 9th in yards, & 2nd in rush ypg. The run game has been solid Martin has 1133y with an avg of 5 ypa.

The D is a work in progress, It is 9th in yards & 7th in rush ypg but 23rd in ppg. They struggle in the red zone.

OK DV-7.5 OK Carr was forced into 3 picks by the pressure last week vs KC. But OK is 13th in ppg & 8th in pass ypg.

5-7 10-2 D still lacks play makers. It is 27th in ppg & 25th in yards pg.

DV Osweiler starts again. He has 5 TDS 3 picks & a pass rating of 85.8. But that is much better than Peyton who has a pass rating of 67.6.

D is 2nd in ppg (17.5) & 1st in ypg & pass ypg. It has been better this year but the O has let the team down badly.

DA GB-7 DA When Romo went down so did the O. DA is 29th in ppg, 27th in ypg & 28th in pass ypg.

4-8 8-4 The D has been better than expected. It is 15th in ppg 6th in ypg & 5th in pass ypg. It played well last week.

GB Rodgers has had a tough season. GB is 8-4 but are 12th in ppg & 23rd in pass ypg. He has to stop throwing picks (2 last wk).

He doesn’t have his top WR but his decisions have not been good. He is trying to do too much, is forcing throws & doesn’t trust the O line.

The D has been solid. It is 6th in ppg. While it gives up yards between the 20’s it is strong in the red zone.

NE-3 HO NE NE has not lost 2 game in a row since 2012. On fryingpansports.com I explained how it happened.

10-2 6-6 Brady is missing a lot on the O line & receiver corps. He has been hit 32 times in the last 3 games. Even so NE is 2nd in ppg (31.2) & 1st in pass yds (315.8)

The D has fallen to 10th in ppg (20.6) & 15th in pass ypg (241.6).

HO HO has not had the season they expected but they “are who we thought they were.”

Hoyer has 18 TDS & just 6 picks with a pass rating of 94.4. He has not been the problem.

The D has disappointed. It is 14th in ppg (22.0) but 3rd in pass ypg. They struggle in the red zone.

Watt broke his hand in practice but will play on Sunday.

SF CL-1.5 SF Gabbert has been a little better than expected but may not have RB Hyde back. Against CL that may not matter.

4-8 2-10 SF D played better at CH last week but has been hit with lots of defections, retirements & injuries.

Poor Phil Dawson. He leaves a train wreck of a franchise to be with a winning franchise only to see it turn into a dumpster fire.

CL “Here’s Johnny!” With Manziel back, the O needs to be adjusted. WRS need to stay alive in scramble mode.

The D can’t stop the run or cover WRS. Other than that things are fine.

My thoughts on Week 8 games

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 8, and previewed all week 8 games including the Browns/Cards.

Lions & Chiefs at London

DT Stafford has been a disaster. O line & run game are worse. Can they score?

D has been stressed by TOS on O.

KC Smith has been bad and Reid in on the hot seat. The DT D should help both.

The pass rush as disappeared D backfield is better w Berry but without a rush it suffers.

Bucs at Falcons

TB Winston has been up & down as has the run game.

Lovie has to get more Tampa 2 players. He has just a few now.

AT AT O has disappeared. It will be back against TB. Ryan has to get WR White back.

D has been much better this year. It will give Winston fits.

Chargers at Ravens

SD Rivers has a pass rating of 99.2. 15TDS 7X. O line & lack of run game have been big issues.

TE Gates is back but not yet FB condition. He must help a weak rec corps.

D has struggled. Injuries are hurting the D.

BA Flacco has been bad & WRS have not helped.

Front 7 is good. Back 4 not so much. Rivers will be a problem.

Vikings at Bears

MN Birdgewater & Peterson have to deal with a bad O line but are solid. Wallace has to catch the ball.

D is 3rd in scoring but needs to take the ball away more. Cutler should help that.

CH Cutler is out at the end of the year. He has not be “in” for much of the season.

Fox needs a D but doesn’t have much of one now.

Titans at Texans

TN Mariota may start but no running game hurt and the O line is over paid and under performing.

D has struggled. DBS are weak but it is getting better.

HO Mallett is gone so no more coin flips but so is Foster. Hoyer needs some help.

D has under achieved. Watt triple teamed & no other pass rusher getting home.

Bengals at Steelers

CN Dalton has been great. PT has little pass rush so he should be fine.

D needs to kept the PT Run game under control. If so the game will be in Ben’s hands.

PT If he plays Big Ben will not be as mobile. W/o LT Beacham it will be hard.

DBS will be challenged by CN O. Can they cover TE Eifert?

This is a must win for PT if they want to get back in the playoff race.

49ers at Rams

SF Can Kaepernick survive the ST pass rush? He needs the run game to slow down the rush.

Pass rush has been inconsistent. Needs it to stop ST pass game.

TE Davis felt Kaep NEEDS to be more inclusive if he wants to be an effective leader.

ST Foles needs to improve. Run game is solid. Gurley is outstanding.

D should shred the SF O line. But can it stop the running game?

Jets at Raiders

NJ O has struggled at QB. Have to get run game going.

D is solid & deep. If they had a QB it would be a great team.

OK Carr is OK but needs protection. Murray is coming around as a RB.

D has some stars like Mack but need more. Best S Woodson is 96.

Seahawks at Cowboys

SE Worst O line in the league. Wilson deserves better. Run game getting better.

D has to stop giving up leads. In 4 losses Wilson & O has gotten a lead only to have D give it up.

DA Cassel proved 1 thing-He is no better than Weeden. Running game is spotty.

Collins R is starting at RG.

D has been a little better but in 4 straight losses has been on the field too much.

Packers at Broncos

GB Rodgers is the best QB in the league. Has lots of weapons & good RB in Lacy. O line is the only ?

D is 1st in scoring D. That is outstanding considering most teams are way behind against GB O.

DV Peyton is dead man walking. Is still able to do just enough to win. Can’t score enough to beat GB.

DV D is really good but gets burned by a precise passing game. Can be run against as well.

Cardinals at Browns

AZ Palmer is playing as well an anyone. Run game is OK when healthy. AZ is 4th on O.

D has been very good. They are 4th also on D.

CL Not sure if McCown can start. I have no desire to see Manziel and would prefer Davis.

Both Haden & Gipson should be back. That will help. But D has to stop the run.

Colts at Panthers

IN Luck has not been the same. He is not looking off safeties and looks nervous. I would be nervous too playing behind that O line.

Colt D has been BAD. Can’t stop the run or the pass. They are lucky to be in the AFC South.

CR Newton is doing it all without quality receivers or much of a running game. How much longer can he get it done alone?

CR D has been solid now that Kuechly is back. He and Davis are as good as it gets.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

Thoughts about NFL weeks 1-4

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 4, and previews of all NFL week 5 games including the Browns/Ravens.

AFC East

Patriots – They look like the best team in the AFC. Only the Court can stop Tom Brady.

Bills – Ty Taylor has been really good and the D is solid.

Jets – The defense is great but no QB means no playoffs.

Dolphins – New head coach but the same players. That is a bad mix.

AFC North

Bengals – Andy Dalton looks great now but he hasn’t played a night or playoff game yet.

Steelers – Mike Vick is no Roethlisberger but the defense isn’t the steel curtain either.

Browns – The offense was questionable but the defense has been terrible.

Ravens – The D is not what it used to be but neither is the O.

AFC South

Colts – Luck is lucky he plays in the AFC Least. Colts get to the playoffs without a D.

Titans – They have 2 NFL starting quality QBS. Lots of teams have none.

Texans – HC Bill O’Brien is not the first to flip a coin to decide who starts at QB. The Browns did it years ago.

Jaguars – They are getting better but need more play makers.

AFC West

Broncos – Team goes as far as Peyton Manning can throw them. That won’t be to the Super Bowl.

Raiders – HC Jack Del Rio has the team playing tough and ready to steal Manning’s lunch money.

Chargers – Phillip Rivers won’t have to move but has to carry the team on his back.

Chiefs – Both O and D are very over rated. Andy Reed is not getting it done.

NFC East

Cowboys – Jerry Jones is learning Brandon Weeden is NOT a good insurance guy.

Giants – Think where they would be if HC Tom Coughlin could figure out how to get off to a fast start.

Redskins – RG3 is playing CB on the scout team. Enough said.

Eagles – 29th in O plays per game? “Chip, the U of Texas is calling. You really need to talk to them.”

NFC North

Packers – In Aaron we trust. He needs to score because the D leaks badly.

Vikings – Does Bridgewater + Peterson = playoffs? Maybe a wild card.

Bears – Only the Lions keep them out of the basement in this division.

Lions – They need coaches and a GM but who wants to live in Detroit?

NFC South

Falcons – HC Dan Quinn has this team playing great. The D is way under rated.

Panthers – I’m still not sold on Cam Newton but love the rebuilt D.

Buccaneers – Jameis Winston completes a lot of throws but some are to the opponent.

Saints – The bag heads are back wondering how DC Ryan keeps his job.

NFC West

Cardinals – They win as long as Carson Palmer is healthy. The O line needs to work harder to insure that.

Seahawks – They have a great QB and RB but the O line is pathetic and may keep them out of the playoffs.

Rams – Nick Foles is not the answer but Bradford wasn’t either. The D is solid.

49ers – Jed York let the coach go when he should have fired the GM. Now Michigan has a better D than the 9ers.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

Greatest values in the 2014 NFL Draft

NFL Draft (2)

NOTE: News, Notes & Rumors will be on the air Monday at 6PM EDT talking draft (The Bill Smith Radio Show or http://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/) following Mr. Moo at 5 (http://mooheadradio.com/2.5/). Please join us. Thanks

Some teams reach for a player due to need. Those reaches end up costing the team in the long term. Tomorrow I will discuss the biggest reaches. Today we will discuss the greatest values found in the draft.  While it is way to early to judge team drafts, we can look at teams that got steals in individual picks.

Jets Trevor Reilly OLB Utah – Expected to be a late 2nd round pick but fell to the 7th round.

He could very well end up starting this season.

Vikings David Yankey OG Stanford – He was my top OG and was expected to go in the last 1st or early 2nd. He fell to pick 108 and was a steal.

Cowboys Ahmad Dixon SS Baylor – Dixon is a hard hitter with above average coverage skills. He was projected as a 4th round talent but the Boys got a deal taking him with the 248th pick in the 7th round.

Titans Zach Mettenberger QB LSU – Even injured and with a back issue, Zach was my 2nd overall QB due to talent and decision making. He was a steal at pick 178 and could be the starter soon.

Steelers Daniel McCullers DT Tennessee – He is a tough guy that should have been a 4th round pick had he not struggled with his weight. If he doesn’t Burger King himself out of the league he should be good.

Bucs Robert Herron WR Wyoming – Herron is a slot guy that has speed and quicks. He was expected to be a 3rd round pick that went at pick 185.

Steelers Jordan Zumwalt OLB UCLA – Zumwalt was more productive than Anthony Barr but not nearly as athletic. He was expected to be 4th round pick but fell to pick 196. He is a Steeler type of guy.

Steelers Martavis Bryant WR Clemson – Bryant is a big fast guy that could have been a late 1st or early 2nd round pick. He fell to the Steelers in the 3rd round pick 118.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think.

News, Notes & Rumors for week 7

nfl

NOTE:  Check out the live News, Notes and Rumors show on Monday and Friday at 6 PM Eastern on The Bill Smith Radio Show or the archive of the shows on http://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/.  On Monday Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discuss the Browns game and the results of the weekend.  On Friday Tony Williams Giants beat writer for Metro New York joins Samantha and me to preview the upcoming games.

News:

Rams QB Sam Bradford suffered a torn ACL and will be lost for the season.  The only other QB on the team is Kellen Clemens so the team will need to find one.

Bears QB Jay Cutler left the game with a muscle tear in his groin.  Backup Josh McCown played well in his absence.  The injury to Cutler will keep him out for at least a month.  The Bears are thinking of signing QB Josh Palmer.  They also lost LB Lance Briggs.

Bengals top CB Leon Hall suffered an Achilles’ tendon injury.  If it is torn he would miss the rest of the season.

The Eagles lost QB Nick Foles to a groin injury but Mike Vick should be able to play next week.  That is a good thing for the team since QB Matt Barkley threw 3 interceptions.

Colt WR Reggie Wayne suffered an ALC tear and is out for the year.  At 35 it is not certain if he will try to return next season.

Ravens RB Bernard Pierce suffered a leg injury which is not considered serious.

Texans LB Brian Cushing suffered a torn LCL and broken leg.  He tweeted he would be back.

Redskin S Brandon Meriweather has been suspended for 2 games for illegal hits.  He has appealed the suspension and it will be heard soon.

The NFL lost two of the old timers in the league.  Titans owner Bud Adams and former Oiler coach Oail Andrew “Bum” Phillips Jr., both 90 years old, died this past weekend.

Notes:

Jets 30 Patriots 27 OT – The Jet defense harassed QB Tom Brady all afternoon.  The Jet D held Brady and the Pat O to 1 of 12 third down conversions.  Despite the 3rd down failures the Pats built a 21-10 lead at half time.  QB Geno Smith was 17-33 with a TD and a pick.  He looked sharp.  The Jets traded with the Saints to get RB Chris Ivory.  He proved his worth for the first time this season running for 104 yards on 34 attempts.

Cowboys 17 Eagles 3 – While QB Foles may have looked like a legitimate starter in Chip Kelly’s O last week, that was the defenseless Buccaneers.  Against the Boys, Foles was exposed.  He was slow to react and make down field reads.  He lacks the speed to challenge the D outside on the zone read.  That hurts the run up the middle and allows the D to play man to man.  He also struggled badly with accuracy.  The Boys were not an offensive juggernaut either against one of the worst defenses in the league.  The Boys scored just 3 points in the first half.  That was bad but the Eagles scored just 3 points for the game.

Steelers 19 Ravens 16 – The Ratbirds still have not solved their O issues.  All of the Raven stats look decent but QB Joe Flacco could not make the play at the critical time.  The Raven O line struggles to handle a blitz.  The pressure forced Flacco to move and that is not his strength.  The Steeler O was not much better.  They also moved the ball between the 20s but failed to get it into the endzone.

Bills 23 Dolphins 21 – QB Ryan Tannehill threw 3 TDs but also lost a fumble and threw 2 interceptions including a pick 6.  The Fish O could not stay on the field converting just 3 of 13 third down attempts.  Bills QB Thad Lewis was just OK but threw for 202 yards without a TD and one pick.  The game turned on Lewis leading two scoring drives in the 4th quarter for field goals.  Starting on his 26 Lewis led the Bills for a field goal early in the 4th quarter to bring the score to MI 21 BF 20.  Tannehill was not able to increase the lead.  When he was sacked he fumbled late in the 4th.   DE Kyle Williams recovered at the Miami 34.  Lewis drove the team to the 13 for the final kick to win.

Redskins 45 Bears 41 – The Bears not only lost their QB early in game, they lost their lead in the NFC North.  But it was not QB Josh McCown that let the Bears down.  It was the Bear D that caused the loss.  The D gave up 499 yards including 209 on the ground.  Time will tell if this was a one time thing or an indication the Bears are a pretender.  Redskin QB Robert Griffin is looking better every week.  With just under 4 minutes left the Bears led 41-38.  RG3 drove the Skins on an 80 yard drive and scored on a run with just 45 second left for the winning TD.

Packers 31 Browns 13 – Browns O was offensive in a bad way.  Check out my in game notes right below this article on http://fryingpansports.com/.

Rumors:

Texans owner Bob McNair gave head coach Gary Kubiak the feared “vote of confidence” after the team almost upset the undefeated Chiefs.

The Rams may have lost Bradford due to a punch.  Earlier in the game OT Chris Long was ejected because of an alleged punch.  On the play on which Bradford was hurt he was forced out of the pocket due to the pass rush.  He was hit on the sideline and is out for the season.

The Bronco loss to the Colts showed the two major flaws in their game.  First the O line is below average but has been disguised by Payton Manning’s quick release.  This loss also showed that the Bronco D is not as strong as it appeared.

Mike Florio reports that Jags WR Justin Blackmon could be traded by Oct. 29th the trading deadline.  There are several teams that have lost WRs or need another one.  Those rumors also include a possible trade of Browns WR Josh Gordon who will be suspended for at least a year if he fails another drug test.  NBC Sports Pro Football Talk reports the Gordon trade is not “probable.”

Despite a near record level of ineptness in his game Monday night, Vikings Coach Leslie Frazier said QB Josh Freeman could start Sunday against the Packers.

Browns coach Rob Chudzinski announced that Jason Campbell will be the starter against the Chiefs Sunday.

The Monday show with co-host Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports reviews the NFL week and Browns game.  The Friday show includes Samantha and Tony Williams Giants beat writer for Metro New York and previews the weekend games.

News:

Texan QB Matt Schaub was hurt and could be out next week.  The team also lost SS Danieal Manning with a broken Fibula.  He will be out 6-8 weeks.

The Packers lost WRs James Jones and Randal Cobb with knee injuries.  They also lost LB Nick Perry with a broken foot.

Pats WR Danny Amendola suffered a concussion.  CB Aqib Talib hurt a hip and LB Jerod Mayo suffered a shoulder injury.

The Cowboys RB Demarco Murray hurt a knee and DE Demarcus Ware will miss several weeks with a quad injury.

The Vikings have lost LB Desmond Bishop for the season with a torn ACL.

The Bills signed former Raider QB Matt Flynn.

The Steelers have placed OT Levi Brown on IR.  The team traded for him on Oct. 2 and he never played a game for them.  He injured his tricepts in pregame warm-up.  This is just one more example of the questionable moves by team management.  Brown has had a history of injury.  Check out my analysis of the Steelers drafts “Why did the Steelers fall so far so fast?”

Notes:

Patriots 30 Saints 27 – The key to this game was a brain cramp by DC Rob Ryan.  With 10 seconds left Ryan decided to not double the receivers in the endzone.  There was 1 on 1 coverage on WR Kenbrell Thompkins and QB Tom Brady hit him for the game winner with 5 seconds left.

Rams 38 Texans 13 – Those that wanted someone else (anyone else?) to play QB for the Texans got their wish.  But only after the Rams had built a 31-6 lead was starting QB Matt Schaub hurt.  T.J. Yates came in and promptly threw a 98 yard pick 6 to Alec Ogletree.  The Texans were never in the game and looked like a team that has given up.  They had 95 yards in penalties and gave the ball away 4 times.

Eagles 31 Buccaneers 20 – Eagle QB Nick Foles was extremely effective and efficient.  He ended up 22 for 31 for 296 yards and 3 TDs without a pick.  He also ran for a TD.  HC Chip Kelly has backed off his plan for 80+ plays a game at least with his backup starting.  The Eagles had only 65 offensive plays.  Bucs QB Mike Glennon played pretty well going 26-43 for 273 and 2 TDs and 1 interception.  The Bucs simply were overmatched by the Eagles speed and efficiency on offense.

Chiefs 24 Raiders 7 – Raider QB Terrelle Pryor was running for his life all afternoon.  He was sacked 10 times behind the patchwork line.  The pressure was unrelenting and forced 3 interceptions as well.  Chiefs QB Alex Smith was only 14-31 for 128 yards without a TD or a pick.  The Raider D is playing very well but the injury plagued O line was the culprit for the loss.  The line could not protect Pryor or block to get the running game going.

Bengals 27 Bills 24 OT – The Bengals built a 24-10 lead going into the 4th quarter and then tried to hang on for the win.  But new Bills starting QB Thad Lewis threw two long TDs to tie the game including a 40 yard TD with just 1:08 left.  He ended up with 19 for 32 for 216 yards and 2 TDs but no picks and 1 fumble lost.  The comeback took a lot of effort and the Bills just did not have enough left to get over the hump in OT.

Packers 19 Ravens 17 – The Raven running game disappeared and it was up to QB Joe Flacco to carry the O.  He failed.  The running game generated 47 yards in 22 attempts.  Flacco was sacked 5 times and converted only 2 of 14 third down attempts.  The Pack was up 16-3 going into the 4th quarter but the Ravens scored 2 late TDs including the last one with 2:04 left in the game.  The Pack found a running game with rookie RB Eddie Lacy gaining 120 yards on 23 carries.  QB Aaron Rodgers was 17-32 for 315 yards with a TD and a pick.

Panthers 35 Vikings 10 – Expect the Matt Cassel experiment to be over soon in Minnesota.  The Vikings were never in the game.  The Vike D made Panther QB Cam Newton look like a Hall of Famer.  Newton was 20-26 for 242 and 3 touchdowns without an interception.  Cassel was 32-44 but threw 2 picks.  The running game was understandably down.  Adrian Peterson had 10 carries for 62 yards but got 31 on a single carry.  The Vikes never got the O going.  The Panther D had something to do with that but most of the problem was inconsistency of the Vike O.  They scored their one TD with 1:00 left in the game.

Seahawks 20 Titans 13 – This gets the weird game of the week award.  The only TD that the Titans scored was on a return of a blocked FG.  Seahawk QB Russell Wilson drove the team down to the Titan 2 with 2 seconds left.  But their FG kicker was hurt.  The punter Jon Ryan tried to kick a FG but the new holder dropped the ball and tried to throw it.  The ball went backward and Jason McCourty ran it 77 yards for the TD.  Titan QB Ryan Fitzpatrick threw 2 interceptions but the Seahawks fumbled twice including the botched FG.  Wilson was 23 for 31 for 257 with no TDs or picks.

Lions 31 Browns 17 – The Browns led at halftime 17-7.  Then the Lions scored 24 straight points aided by a QB Brandon Weeden meltdown.  For my opinion about the game check out my live game notes on fryingpansports.com.

Rumors:

After watching the Eagles with both Michael Vick and Nick Foles, it is clear to me that Foles should be the QB going forward.  Vick is on a one year contract and has only completed a 16 game season once since returning from his stint as a guest of the state for dog fighting.  Foles is young, talented and more accurate passing than Vick because his mechanics are stable.  Even after years behind center, Vick’s mechanics are never consistent.

With the announcement that Brandon Weeden will remain at QB for the Browns it is clear to me that upper management wants to tank the season for a higher draft choice.  It is hard to watch Weeden play.  A good coach can correct inaccuracy due to mechanics or footwork.  A good coach can correct a flawed throwing motion.  There is no hope for a QB that wets his pants every time he gets rushed.  If the team wanted to win they would (1) bench Weeden, (2) start Jason Campbell and (3) sign a young QB free agent.  I would like to see the team sign Tyler Wilson off the Raiders practice squad.  Going into the 2012 college season he was considered a first round pick.  Arkansas had a horrendous season due to a change in head coach and lack of talent around Wilson.  He has well above average arm strength, is accurate even when getting hit and has experience behind a less than optimal offensive line.

The biggest impact that the Browns decision to keep starting Weeden may be their inability to keep their own free agents and sign those from other teams.  No quality NFL player wants to play for an organization that is willing to tank a season for a draft pick.  C Alex Mack, S T.J. Ward and LB Craig Robertson will be free agents at the end of this season.

The Chargers showed other teams the formula for beating QB Andrew Luck and the Colts.  The Bolts held the ball for 38:31 and scored on 5 possessions.  They also held the Colts to 2 of 10 3rd down conversion attempts.

There are a bunch of trade rumors floating around.  Last season the trading deadline would have been 4PM EDT today.  This year it was moved back 2 weeks.  The majority of rumors are about the bottom feeders trading players for 2014 draft choices.  There are usually few deals done around the trading deadline.  But with so many injuries around the league this year for teams in contention, 2013 could be the exception.

After week 6 it is time to look at the coaches on the hot seat.

Bucs HC Greg Schiano has irritated the other coaches, his players and this season is 0-6.  He is dead man walking.

Texans HC Gary Kubiak is on the hot seat with his team at 2-4.  The struggles of Schaub should put team management on the hot seat as well.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin has 2 super bowl wins but with the team at 0-6 the heat is on.  Despite injuries the team has not won this year and has not been a factor in the NFC East in the last couple of seasons.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has struggled this year.  The issue is not coaching.  The problem is the lack of quality draft choices.  GM Kevin Colbert is the guy that should go.

Atlanta coach Mike Smith is on the hot seat but should not be.  The injuries combined with a lack of depth have caused the team to go 1-4.  He should survive and coach next year.

Jaguars coach Gus Bradley is in his first year but the team has been bad.  He is likely to stay but will be on shaky ground next season.  He is not a very good head coach.

That’s what I think.  Tell me what you think.
