Some thoughts about Week 16/17 NFL.

Week 16 NFL

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from the previous week, and previewed all of this week’s games including a detailed analysis of the Browns game.

Steelers pulled a “Buckeye” by not showing up against a Raven team with a defensive backfield that could not cover me running a pattern. What happened? They choked. If the Steelers get in the playoffs they will have fallen backwards across the goal line. They could be a force but not if they play like they did against the Ravens.

Chip Kelly is out and if you were surprised SHAME ON YOU for not listening to NNR. Samantha and I have been telling you for weeks that this was coming. It was well deserved. As a former coach myself I can say that anyone that makes player decisions based on who he likes will never succeed.

The NFL is about play makers and Kelly gave away the guys that had the best ability to make plays. It was also a HUGE mistake to try to force his system on players that did not fit it. A good coach adapts his system to … Read more at FryingPanSports

The Eagle D is coming around

The Eagle D is coming around.

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 6, our views of all week 6 games including the Browns/Broncos.

On Monday night the Giants scored a TD on their 1st possession. But then the Eagle D shut them down. While the Eagle O is still trying to fit all the new gadgets into the game, the D has figured it out and is playing very well. The early issues on defense were primarily caused by the lack of rest. When the O can’t convert 3rd downs in a no huddle O, the D is on the field a lot.

The team has missed ILB Mychal Kendricks for a couple of weeks. Despite that the D is playing aggressive defense. Rookie 3rd round pick Jordan Hicks has been outstanding. He has helped the D continue to improve. His instincts are outstanding.

Two early interceptions, one of which was a pick 6, made Giant QB Eli Manning tentative. That combined with WR Odell Beckham Jr. being the primary target made the job of the Eagle D much easier. … Read more at FryingPanSports

Thoughts about NFL weeks 1-4

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 4, and previews of all NFL week 5 games including the Browns/Ravens.

AFC East

Patriots – They look like the best team in the AFC. Only the Court can stop Tom Brady.

Bills – Ty Taylor has been really good and the D is solid.

Jets – The defense is great but no QB means no playoffs.

Dolphins – New head coach but the same players. That is a bad mix.

AFC North

Bengals – Andy Dalton looks great now but he hasn’t played a night or playoff game yet.

Steelers – Mike Vick is no Roethlisberger but the defense isn’t the steel curtain either.

Browns – The offense was questionable but the defense has been terrible.

Ravens – The D is not what it used to be but neither is the O.

AFC South

Colts – Luck is lucky he plays in the AFC Least. Colts get to the playoffs without a D.

Titans – They have 2 NFL starting quality QBS. Lots of teams have none.

Texans – HC Bill O’Brien is not the first to flip a coin … Read more at FryingPanSports

What’s wrong with the Eagles?

View image | gettyimages.com

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, previewed week 3 in the NFL including the Browns & Raiders. Check it out on fryingpansports.com/radio-show/.

In short, there is a lot wrong with the Eagles.
The offense is the biggest issue. They have not been able to convert 3rd downs. In game 1 they were 3 for 12 and just 2 of 11 at home against Dallas. Without converting 3rddown, the Chip Kelly speed up offense wears down the Eagle D not the opponent.
A big reason that the running game is not working. It was a bad idea to bring in RB DeMarco Murray. He had almost 500 touches last year in Dallas. Running backs that have had 400+ touches have not done well the following year. But an even bigger issues is the running system. Kelly wants to pull 2 O linemen for runs at the edge. That works in college but in the NFL the D linemen are way too fast and experienced. The Eagle runners are caught in the backfield way too often by a D linemen or linebacker

News, Notes & Rumors Week 1

nfl

News:

The running game in week 1 was WAY down in part because lots of NFL teams have major O line issues.  The Seahawks struggled to score 12 points against the Panthers.  The Browns could not run or pass in a loss to the Dolphins.  The Steelers lose their C Maurkice Pouncey and score only 1 TD.  There was only one RB that got 100+ yards (Shane Vereen of the Pats). and he has a broken bone in his wrist.

Colin Kaepernick QB of the 49ers was outstanding against the Packers.  He was 27-39 412 yards with 3 TDs and no picks.  His new best friend is former Raven WR Anquan Boldin who caught 13 passes for 208 yards and a TD.  Despite only running for a total of 90 yards the Niners beat the Pack.   Jim Harbaugh is going to owe brother John a REALLY nice Christmas gift for the trade of Boldin.

While the Bills D played well, the Pats are clearly hurt by the loss of targets for Tom Brady.  Of course the two fumbles by RB Stevan Ridley did not help the O.  The same can be said for the Ravens losing … Read more at FryingPanSports

Coaching analysis of the Chip Kelly Eagle offense

<

p style=”text-align: center”<img id=”rg_hi” alt=”” src=”https://fryingpansports.com/”197″ height=”256″ /

sportsillustrated.cnn.com

Monday night we got our first regular season view of the new Chip Kelly Eagle offense.  While it is very interesting from a coaching perspective, I see some serious flaws that make me question how far the team will go this year.

Where there is space there will be collisions.  The concept of spreading the offense and thus the defense has great merit.  However, the skill players of the Eagles are all small by NFL standards.  The spacing of the O linemen allows the defenders room to get up to speed prior to hitting the ball carrier.  LeSean McCoy is not big enough to carry the ball 31 times a game.  Very few backs are.  Both QB Mike Vick and WR DeSean Jackson are small and injury prone.  If any of those three get hurt, the offense will be much less effective.

The opponents’ defense is not the only group that runs out of gas.  The Eagles blitzed out of the gate scoring 33 points before the Redskins could get an offensive point.  Then the Birds had to hang on by their fingernails to squeeze out a … Read more at FryingPanSports
