Thoughts on the 1st half of the NFL season.

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 9, and previewed all week 10 games including the Browns/Steelers.

AFC East

Patriots – No question Tom Brady is playing at a very high level. The question is will issues in the D backfield cost them a Super Bowl?

Bills – New coaching staff, solid D but the same old problem—No QB.

Jets – No question the D is one of the very best. They have the same issue as the Bills.

Dolphins – The team quit on their former coach and this team is headed for a total rework.

AFC North

Bengals – QB Andy Dalton has played very well but can they win a playoff game? No.

Steelers – Injuries have decimated this team but the D backfield has never been worse.

Ravens – The only thing that will save HC Harbaugh’s job is the super bowl win.

Browns – It is time to blow up the organization again. The sooner they fire GM Ray Farmer the better the 2016 draft will be.

AFC South

Colts – If things weren’t bad enough Andrew Luck is hurt. The D is pathetic and now the QB is 85 years old.

Texans – Once they stopped flipping coins to decide which QB to start the team has started to win. The D has always been solid. The Colts had better watch out.

Jaguars – Blake Bortles is playing well but needs more weapons. The D is a disaster and needs to be upgraded.

Titans – They drafted a QB and have 2 legitimate starters. They need to trade 1 to get more players.

AFC West

Broncos – Peyton Manning has fallen and he can’t get up. He is clearly not the QB he used to be. The D has saved them often but will not get him to a Super Bowl win.

Raiders – HC Jack Del Rio has this team headed in the right direction. He has a QB and a couple of receivers. One more good draft will make this team very dangerous.

Chiefs – It was clear that KC would struggle on O but the D has disintegrated as well. Maybe the pass rushers’ wallets are slowing them down.

Chargers – Any team that has rumors of moving out of town is bound to be hurt. Phillip Rivers has carried this team on his back for years. This year he is getting even less help than in the past.

NFC East

Giants – Eli Manning is struggling without a run game and an O line in flux. The D needs to generate more pressure on the opposing QB but the injury to JPP has made that unlikely.

Eagles – Chip Kelly has made some strange moves collecting 2 RBS and a QB with serious injury histories. The high speed O will kill the D unless they can make 1st downs and hold the ball.

Redskins – This team is a dumpster fire and yet they are looking down at the Cowboys. They have no QB and the run game has gone south. The D has never been good.

Cowboys – Jerry Jones has no one to blame but himself. He thought either Brandon Weeden or Matt Cassel could replace Tony Romo and keep the team winning. He was VERY wrong.

NFC North

Packers – The Panthers showed every team how to stop the Pack O—cover the receivers until the D line can sack the QB. The D has fallen off as well in the last 2 losses.

Vikings – The combination of Bridgewater and Peterson have the team in the hunt for a playoff spot. But the D is contributing by holding opponents to 17.5 ppg.

Bears – Cutler will be gone next year. Some coach will think they are the guy that can turn him into an superstar but they will be wrong.

Lions – “With the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select…”

NFC South

Panthers – Newton is playing OK but is not an MVP candidate completing just 53.7% with 14TDS but 9 interceptions. The D has been outstanding allowing 20.6 ppg.

Falcons – They were undefeated until the O played road kill. It has always been the D that did them in.

Saints – Brees is doing all he can but has to wonder who’s side the D is on. The DC is a big part of the problem.

Buccaneers – Winston is learning that the NFL is not like the ACC. He will get it but it will take a while. The D needs more players like LB David.

NFC West

Cardinals – This team is a time bomb waiting for Carson Palmer to get hurt again. As long as he is healthy this team is a Super Bowl contender.

Rams – Foles is not the answer at QB but neither was Bradford. They have the RB in Gurley and the D. All they need now is the QB and some bigger WRS.

Seahawks – Russel Wilson has been sacked 85 times in 8 games despite his mobility. The O line is killing their chances to get back to the Super Bowl. The D has also given up leads late in games.

49ers – Kaepernick will be gone at the end of the season. Some coach will think they are the guy that can turn him into a star and they will be right. Ownership will be sorry they let their HC and QB leave.

My thoughts on Week 8 games

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NOTE: On NNR Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discussed the news of the day, injuries from week 8, and previewed all week 8 games including the Browns/Cards.

Lions & Chiefs at London

DT Stafford has been a disaster. O line & run game are worse. Can they score?

D has been stressed by TOS on O.

KC Smith has been bad and Reid in on the hot seat. The DT D should help both.

The pass rush as disappeared D backfield is better w Berry but without a rush it suffers.

Bucs at Falcons

TB Winston has been up & down as has the run game.

Lovie has to get more Tampa 2 players. He has just a few now.

AT AT O has disappeared. It will be back against TB. Ryan has to get WR White back.

D has been much better this year. It will give Winston fits.

Chargers at Ravens

SD Rivers has a pass rating of 99.2. 15TDS 7X. O line & lack of run game have been big issues.

TE Gates is back but not yet FB condition. He must help a weak rec corps.

D has struggled. Injuries are hurting the D.

BA Flacco has been bad & WRS have not helped.

Front 7 is good. Back 4 not so much. Rivers will be a problem.

Vikings at Bears

MN Birdgewater & Peterson have to deal with a bad O line but are solid. Wallace has to catch the ball.

D is 3rd in scoring but needs to take the ball away more. Cutler should help that.

CH Cutler is out at the end of the year. He has not be “in” for much of the season.

Fox needs a D but doesn’t have much of one now.

Titans at Texans

TN Mariota may start but no running game hurt and the O line is over paid and under performing.

D has struggled. DBS are weak but it is getting better.

HO Mallett is gone so no more coin flips but so is Foster. Hoyer needs some help.

D has under achieved. Watt triple teamed & no other pass rusher getting home.

Bengals at Steelers

CN Dalton has been great. PT has little pass rush so he should be fine.

D needs to kept the PT Run game under control. If so the game will be in Ben’s hands.

PT If he plays Big Ben will not be as mobile. W/o LT Beacham it will be hard.

DBS will be challenged by CN O. Can they cover TE Eifert?

This is a must win for PT if they want to get back in the playoff race.

49ers at Rams

SF Can Kaepernick survive the ST pass rush? He needs the run game to slow down the rush.

Pass rush has been inconsistent. Needs it to stop ST pass game.

TE Davis felt Kaep NEEDS to be more inclusive if he wants to be an effective leader.

ST Foles needs to improve. Run game is solid. Gurley is outstanding.

D should shred the SF O line. But can it stop the running game?

Jets at Raiders

NJ O has struggled at QB. Have to get run game going.

D is solid & deep. If they had a QB it would be a great team.

OK Carr is OK but needs protection. Murray is coming around as a RB.

D has some stars like Mack but need more. Best S Woodson is 96.

Seahawks at Cowboys

SE Worst O line in the league. Wilson deserves better. Run game getting better.

D has to stop giving up leads. In 4 losses Wilson & O has gotten a lead only to have D give it up.

DA Cassel proved 1 thing-He is no better than Weeden. Running game is spotty.

Collins R is starting at RG.

D has been a little better but in 4 straight losses has been on the field too much.

Packers at Broncos

GB Rodgers is the best QB in the league. Has lots of weapons & good RB in Lacy. O line is the only ?

D is 1st in scoring D. That is outstanding considering most teams are way behind against GB O.

DV Peyton is dead man walking. Is still able to do just enough to win. Can’t score enough to beat GB.

DV D is really good but gets burned by a precise passing game. Can be run against as well.

Cardinals at Browns

AZ Palmer is playing as well an anyone. Run game is OK when healthy. AZ is 4th on O.

D has been very good. They are 4th also on D.

CL Not sure if McCown can start. I have no desire to see Manziel and would prefer Davis.

Both Haden & Gipson should be back. That will help. But D has to stop the run.

Colts at Panthers

IN Luck has not been the same. He is not looking off safeties and looks nervous. I would be nervous too playing behind that O line.

Colt D has been BAD. Can’t stop the run or the pass. They are lucky to be in the AFC South.

CR Newton is doing it all without quality receivers or much of a running game. How much longer can he get it done alone?

CR D has been solid now that Kuechly is back. He and Davis are as good as it gets.

That is what I think. Tell us what you think by commenting here or tweeting me @NNRonDSN.

Radisson Hotels suspend support for Vikes

Radisson Hotels suspend support for Vikes

News:

The Radisson Hotel chain has suspended sponsorship of the Vikings. This is what the new Viking banner looks like.

Week 2 was disastrous for a lot of teams suffering significant injuries.

Redskins lost QB Robert Griffin for a number of weeks with a dislocated ankle. They also lost WR DeSean Jackson with a shoulder sprain.

Chiefs lost RB Jamaal Charles with a high ankle sprain and S Eric Berry with a low ankle sprain.

Chargers lost RB Ryan Mathews for a month with an MCL sprain.

Saints RB Mark Ingram with a broken hand for a month.

Bengals WR A.J. Green is dealing with a toe injury.

49ers lost TE Vernon Davis with an ankle injury and Vance McDonald with a knee injury.

The Bears lost CB Charles Tillman for the year with a torn tricep.

Bucs DT Gerald McCoy broke his hand.

Bears lost CB Charles Tillman with a triceps injury.

Jags lost TE Marcedes Lewis with a ankle injury.

Jets lost WR Eric Decker.

2-0 teams

Bills – Not making the playoffs.

Bengals – Playing better than I thought and should make the playoffs.

Texans – Amazing what a last place schedule will do for a team. No playoffs.

Broncos – Will continue to win as long as Payton Manning is healthy.

Eagles – Best team in a terrible division. Playoffs.

Panthers – Falcons have fallen & Saints 0-2. Panthers could make the playoffs.

Cardinals – With the 49ers struggling they may make the playoffs.

0-2 teams

Colts – Two tough losses but in an easy division. Playoffs.

Jaguars – When Hell freezes over.

Raiders – See comment above.

Chiefs – Are not as good as 13 and got a harder schedule. No playoffs.

Giants – Dead. No chance for the playoffs.

Saints – Will make the playoffs but not go far. Needed home field in NFC.

Bucs – Better but a couple of years away from playoffs.

Notes:

Bears 28 49ers 20 – The 49ers paid the price for not protecting QB Kaepernick. The O died in the 4th quarter under the blitz of the Bears. Meanwhile the SF D was giving up points in bunches. The losses by SF in both suspensions, injuries and free agents have reduced the power of the team D. They are now at risk for missing the playoffs.

Packers 31 Jets 24 – Only the Jets could score a TD to tie the game when the bench called a TO. The Pack is not the team they have been in the past. The D has never been outstanding but now is leaking badly. The pass defense is a sieve and may end up costing the team a shot at the playoffs. The O should be better with a running game but the O line is still bad. Pack should make the playoffs unless QB Aaron Rodgers goes down.

Cowboys 26 Titans 10 – Even the Boys D can handle an offense that is playing the wrong QB. Zach Mettenberger is the better QB but the team is starting Jake Locker. Both teams are 1-1 but neither is going anywhere this year.

Panthers 24 Lions 7 – The great O of the Lions disappeared under the rush of the Panthers. I am not a Cam Newton fan but against a bad D backfield he looked OK. Carolina may make the playoffs but does not have the O to go far. Detroit is at best a middle of the pack team.

Redskins 41 Jags 10 – The injury to Robert Griffin may actually help the Skins make the playoffs. QB Kirk Cousins is a better pocket passer than RG3. The Jags are in for a long season.

Bengals 24 Falcons 10 – The Bengals are close to being the best team in the AFC North. Their D is outstanding and as long as QB Andy Dalton doesn’t try to do too much they should get into the playoffs. The Falcons suffer from a really bad D which is the only team without a sack in the league. Despite the powerful O, they are doomed.

Browns 26 Saints 24 – Good win by the Browns. To see my detailed discussion of this game check out my analysis “Great win but Browns have a lot of work to do.” Read more at http://fryingpansports.com/#7JeDkshYhp4S5ChI.99

Rumors:

Raiders may want to fire HC Dennis Allen but team owner Mark Davis is cheap and won’t want to spend money on 2 coaches. The team has a week 5 bye so someone on the coaching staff could be promoted then.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said that the Boys are going to the playoffs. That is not going to happen any time soon. If they don’t he would like to get a better HC but no one that has any NFL credibility will take the job as long as he is the GM.

The Falcons believe that last year was a singular occurrence due to injuries. But the lack of defensive pass rush and inability to convert 3rd down on O is killing them. HC Mike Smith is a very good coach but may be fired if the team doesn’t live up to what I consider unrealistic expectations.

Tons of rumors about the new drug policy have finally become fact. While the reports have been that the NFLPA player reps approved the policy, my sources tell me that is not the case. What I hear is that the reps approved the NFLPA negotiating staff to work out the details. We will report on the details when they become available.

News, Notes and Rumors

News:

The Eagles were one of my Golden 5 picks against the
Seahawks—to lose of course.  They did and
the team is in shambles.  With just 4
wins the entire organization is on the hot seat.  But right now it does not look like HC Reid
will lose his job.  However, he may opt
to quit to take one of the jobs that will be open.

The Bengals are not ready to challenge either the
Ravens or the Steelers yet.  But they are
much better and are the odds on favorite to take over when age finally takes
the other two down.

While the Colts have not yet won, they are not
giving up.  They scored 24 against the
Pats.  That is a good sign for them but a
very bad sign for the Pats D.  The Pats
cannot win in the playoffs with a pass D that bad.

The Tebow effect is alive and well.  He brought the team back against the Vikes to
win 35-32.  The Broncos may even make the
playoffs but the run first O will not go far against the top teams in the AFC.

The Cowgirls are struggling.  The loss to the weak Cards showed flaws in
the team on both sides of the ball.  Too
much has been made of the timeout called by HC Garrett.  The problems go a lot deeper.  Garrett will probably be the HC in 2012 but
he better get the Girls playing better or else…

The Packers got by the Giants in what may have been
the biggest risk to a perfect season left on their schedule.  While the team would love to be perfect, they
are much more interested in winning back to back Super Bowls.

The Dolphins have now won 4 of their last 5 games
and the win over the Raiders was impressive.
The coaching staff has done a nice job in getting as much from a very
average roster as possible.  QB Moore has
played well competing 64% of his throws with 8 TDs and just 1 pick in that
period.  The D is playing better than
expected.  The team is winning enough to
take them out of the draft spot to get one of the top QBs.

Both the Lions and Bills started out the season
fast.  But the problem with newbies on
the big boy playground is they do not have the depth to win with the injuries
that always happen.  The Bengals won the
AFC North a couple of years ago because they suffered very few injuries.  Both the Lions and Bills are better but need
to get deeper to overcome injuries.

Notes:

The Pack has clinched the NFC North.  The Bears lost their last 2 games and are in
a tailspin.  The O generated just 3
points against the Chiefs who lost another QB (Orton) during the game.  The Bears O scheme has struggled even when QB
Cutler was healthy.  There are no
legitimate WRs on the roster.  Now that
RB Forte is hurt, things will get worse.

The Sports Economist is reporting that the Security and Exchange Commission is investigating the financing of the Marlins stadium.  The issue is that county
commissioners financed the project without ever seeing the team’s
financials.

Browns fans need to have a lot of antacids on hand
prior to their game against the Steelers on Thursday and for the rest of the
season.  The team is not playing well and
both the Steelers and the Ravens will take their games against the Brownies
very seriously.  Thursday night will not
be pretty.

Rumors:

There will be a lot of NFL jobs available on Black
Monday January 3, 2012.

The
Jaguars have already fired their HC Del Rio.
Don’t be surprised if the GM goes as well.  The new owner will want his own guys.

The Colts
will replace their staff because they have a real shot at a perfect 0-16
record.  The team has not drafted well
and was totally unprepared for the injury to QB Manning.

The Chargers
will not make the playoffs and both GM Smith and the coaching staff will be
gone.

The Vikes will
likely replace their staff unless they win 3 of the 4 games remaining.

The
Dolphins have already been looking to replace their head coach.  So far no name brand has jumped at the
position.

The
Texans are likely to replace their coach unless they not only make the playoffs
but win a game or 2.  While they might
stumble into the playoffs, the QB situation will prevent any chance of
advancing.

The Rams
are struggling with 2 broken QBs.  But
the problems run to the selection of players and the lack of depth on the
roster.  Changes will come to the Rams.

The Bucs
coaching staff is in serious trouble.
While QB Freeman has not played well, the D has broken down and the
running game has struggled as well.  HC
Morris was expected to take this team to challenge for the playoffs.  Instead, the Bucs are in the running for a
top draft pick.

Even HC
Shanahan in Washington is in trouble.
That makes a total of 9 potential openings.  The Skins O have been a disaster.  Shanahan has changed QBs faster than most
people change underwear.  The running
game has disappeared.  And the coach was
supposed to be an O genius.

Rumors that we might believe:

The Browns are rethinking their draft away from a WR and more toward a D player. Both BJ Raja (Boston Col) and Brian Orakpo (Texas) seem to be the leaders.

However, the Jets have a deal with Jacksonville to move to the 8th pick if one of the 3 players they want is still on the board. The Jags want desperately to trade out of 8 to get more picks.

The Pats are looking hard at Clay Matthews OLB USC. They love players with a pedigree and smart guys. Matthews may turn out to be the best of the USC linebackers and he was a walk on in college.

I predict:

Don’t expect the Edwards (WR Cleveland) trade to be completed but a QB deal could be. It looks like the Giant deal is dead.

The deal with The Lions signing QB Matthew Stafford (Georgia) increases the chances that some team will want one of the Browns QBs. Reportedly the Vikes are interested among others.

The Lion’s pick also drives up the value of 3rd QB Josh Freeman (Kansas St). Look for him to be gone by pick 19 Tampa.

While a number of potential suiters might like to trade up to get QB Mark Sanchez (USC) but he will be taken by Seattle with the 4th pick. The value of the 3rd pick 2200 points. That is too much for the Jets at 17 or Tampa at 19 to get to.

ILBs will fall. Both James Laurinaitis (Ohio State) and Rey Maualuga (USC) have fallen to the bottom of the first round or maybe into the second. The value of an ILB is lower than OB and neither of them had a particularly great pro day.

Chris Beanie Wells (RB Ohio State) has fallen but has gotten up. Because of his toe problem and his 40 time early in the draft season he fell to the late 1st or early 2nd but he has made a comeback. Look for Wells to be gone no later than 21 to the Eagles.

The Bengals are not worried about the off the field problems that OT Andre Smith (Alabama) had by getting suspended for the Bowl game and quiting at the Combine. The Bengals will take Smith with the 6th pick unless BJ Raji is there. That might cause them to change players.

Despite the hype a couple of players will under produce based on their draft position.

OT Eugene Monroe (Virginia) is soft. While he will become an outstanding pass blockers, he will never be the run blocker you would expect.

3-4 OLB Brian Orakpo (Texas) is not a pass rush specialist and will disappoint the team that drafts him. He will be a good backer but not the pass rush guy they think they got.

Tyson Jackson DE LSU and Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio State will be among the candidates for D rookie of the year.

Rumors that are probably not true:

The NFL has told the Bengals that they must use the no huddle offense in 09. That is only because felons violate their probation if they are within 20 feet of each other.

Detroit seriously considered bringing Mike Vick in as their starting QB and taking an OT with their first pick. That was not because they though Vick was a winner. They knew that PETA would send hundreds of protesters into the stadium and the Lions could use the extra attendance.

That’s what I think. Tell me what you think.

KC’s trade for QB Cassel resulted in some unforeseen repercussions.

By Bill Smith

t

No one was surprised that ex-Patriot personnel guy Scott Pioli traded to get a couple of his former players to add some leadership to the Chiefs. Based on how the team played last year, it can use all the leadership Pioli can gather. When he landed QB Matt Cassel, Pioli caused ripples through the NFL.

The Lions now have some options at 1st choice:

While there are several teams that would like a QB, the Jets at 17 now look like the only one willing to spend a 1st round pick on one of the 2 top QB (Matt Stafford, Georgia and Mark Sanchez, USC).

While the majority of mock drafts have the Lions taking Stafford or Sanchez with the first pick, I am not at all sure that is a lock. I would not be surprised if the Lions took a chance and drafted an OT with the first pick then used the 22nd pick from the Cowboys to take whichever QB is left.

That would give the Lions a chance to keep their QB upright whoever that might be. It would also reduce the risk of taking a junior QB with the first pick. The history of that has not been positive. The risk and the cost of a QB at 22 would be significantly lower.

The NFL may look into the Cassel deal for insider trading:

Ex-Pat Pioli got a heck of a deal—in fact he may have gotten the steal of the century so far. The Chiefs reportedly got Cassel and LB Mike Vrabel for a second round choice. There were several teams that have reported that they would have given the Pats more than that for Cassel alone. The current rumor is that the NFL may look into the deal for the football equivalent of insider trading given the close relationship between Pioli and the Pats.

Ripples shake the Broncos:

New Denver head coach Josh McDaniels who was the OC for the Pats last year also wanted Matt Cassel. He was busy trying to pull off a three team deal that would have sent last year starter for the Broncos Jay Cutler to Tampa or another team in order to bring Cassel to Denver. When that was leaked, the Bronco fans were shocked but Cutler seemed to handle it as well as could be expected.

He was reported to have told the press that he was not shocked but very disappointed that his new coach would trade him away.

My Analysis: It was not a secret that he was very upset at the firing of former HC Mike Shanahan. The fact that McDaniels wanted to trade him has not made Cutler more comfortable in Denver. The relationship between coach and QB was already strained. Now McDaniels has to do something to fix it before the season. This was a stupid move by a rookie coach. You just don’t do something like that to a franchise quarterback and expect it not to get leaked. McDaniels has to engage brain before activating mouth.

New coach, new GM, same old Bucs:

The Bucs are still collecting QBs the way that some people collect stamps. According to reports from several sources, new Tampa Bucs GM Mark Dominik and new HC Raheem Morris made it clear they wanted Cutler. They were one of the trade partners for Denver to help the Broncos get Cassel.

My Analysis: If you have a covey of QBs, you don’t have any. The Bucs had a serviceable QB in Jeff Garcia but he was not what the new staff wanted. Do you really think Brian Griese or Josh Johnson can lead you anywhere but to a high draft choice next year? Probably not.

That’s what I think. Tell me what you think.
