News, Notes & Rumors for week 9

nfl

NOTE:  Check out the live News, Notes and Rumors show on Monday and Friday at 6 PM Eastern on The Bill Smith Radio Show or the archive of the shows on https://fryingpansports.com/radio-show/.  On Monday Samantha Bunten of NBC Sports and I discuss the Browns game and the results of the weekend.  On Friday Tony Williams Giants beat writer for Metro New York joins Samantha and me to preview the upcoming games.

News:

By far the biggest news of the weekend was the Monday night injury to QB Aaron Rodgers.  The latest report indicates that he has a break in his collar bone.  Without Rodgers the Pack has little chance to make the playoffs.

Our thoughts go out to two NFL head coaches with health issues.  FPS staff wishes both John Fox and Gary Kubiak a fast complete recovery.  The job of an NFL coach is a 20 hour a day 52 week a year sentence.  Those that take the job understand the physical demands that come with it.  However, they do it for the love of the game.

Season ending injuries are way up this season.  If the trend continues this season will set an all … Read more at FryingPanSports

Fantasy Football Quarterbacks

Fantasy Football Quarterbacks

Having a good quarterback is a key to success in fantasy football. Every year, the league is based more around passing than running. A lot of teams will throw to their running backs almost as much as they hand them the ball. When you are drafting, you should consider the following three QBs to be at the top of the list.

Most fantasy football players draft quarterbacks early, but not as early as they draft their running backs and wide receivers. That’s in spite of the fact that fantasy football quarterbacks will consistently score more points for a team than a running back or a wide receiver. The difference is that you can only start a single quarterback, but you can almost always start two running backs and two wide receivers.

That being said, quarterbacks are important, and here are some tips and suggestions about some quarterbacks to keep an eye on in 2011.

1. Tom Brady

Last year, he got the ball to Danny Woodhead, a Division Three, undrafted rookie, and two rookie tight ends. He got no help from Randy Moss and had to throw to Deion Branch, who is well out of … Read more at FryingPanSports

The Biggest Questions For the 2011 Fantasy Football Season

It looks like the new collective bargaining agreement is going into effect sometime today (7/25/2011) and we should start seeing action all over the pro football realm. This means the 25 million or so fantasy football players can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Fantasy football will be played, trades will be made, and trophies will be be won. There is a controversial question that has been hotly debated over the past few months, really since the end of last years fantasy season. Should Michael Vick not only be the #1 quarterback drafted but the #1 overall pick? There are millions of fantasy owners on both sides of the fence. Is there a right answer. I for one am not quite sure there is, but let’s see if we can find it.

Argument(s) For Vick Being The #1 Overall Pick

The main argument for Vick being the #1 overall pick is that he is the most unique and dynamic player in fantasy football. When that fantasy football draft board goes up should he be the #1 pick? Here is what proponents say about that question.

Vick is a risk/reward player but the reward far outweighs the risk. Vick in addition … Read more at FryingPanSports

Super Bowl 2011: A Commentary

Another NFL season has passed, and another Super Bowl is in the books as the Green Bay Packers were crowned the leagues best by defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers. Aaron Rodgers had another great game, and in doing so, cemented himself as perhaps the league’s premiere quarterback. However, we already knew he was a great quarterback, and there was one more important thing we learned from this game.

Respect

The Packer defense has been near the top of the league in many categories over the last few seasons, yet they have never been considered among the league’s elite. That moniker has been bestowed on teams like Baltimore, San Diego, and of course the Steelers. It happened throughout the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. We heard more than we ever wanted to about “Blitzburgh,” and Dick Lebeau, Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, etc.

The only Packer on the defensive side of the ball you ever heard about was Clay Matthews. He may as well have been on the field alone, as you never heard a word about anyone else. It may have been Aaron Rodgers who climbed out from under Brett Favre’s ghost and led the Pack to a 31-25 victory … Read more at FryingPanSports
