Last Chance for Analytics

For Browns fans, these are the times that try men’s souls.  This Browns front office has 1 more chance to turn the team around or it will be gone.  I believe that HC Jackson has some time but not the front office.

My experience tells me when someone thinks they are the smartest guy in the room, very often they are not even in the running.  The Browns Front office is trying something different—Analytics.  The do think they are smarter than the rest of the league.  While Analytics works in baseball or basketball, it will not work in football.

One of the things that analytics suggests is trade down to get more draft picks.  That might work if the front office had any idea what they are doing with the extra picks.  Last Monday we detailed the picks that this administration made in 2016.  None of them were ranked in the top 60 in terms of production.  This year began with that same FO failing to get a deal with Pryor who got 1000 yards in his first season as WR with a bunch of nobodies throwing to him.  Instead they got an 8 year veteran who has just 1 1000 yard season in his career.

The FO had a chance to get QB Wentz with the 2nd pick last year but chose to trade down and depend on a fragile RG2.5 at that position.  Wentz and a very flawed Eagle team won 7 games.  The Cleveland Tans went 1-15.

1-15 would feel much better if we had a AFC North style rookie QB starting and learning from his mistakes.  What we had was the usual 43 QBs.  The QB they drafted in the 3rd round is a weak armed, under sized guy from the Pac12 who plays no D at all.

I am at the end of my rope with this group of pinheads.  What makes me think that EVP Sashi Brown can find more than 1 decent player?  Nothing at all.  My suggestion to Brown is go back to being a lawyer because you have no business being a judge of NFL talent.

Patrick Mahomes Aims To Shine At NFL Combine

Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is looking forward to NFL Combine, and is aching to play for the Browns and Hue Jackson. He is the quarterback for Texas Tech and wants to show that he is just as strong as Deshaun Watson and Mitch Trubisky to coach Hue Jackson. During Super Bowl week, Mahomes told cleveland.com said that he wants to be one of the first picks in the draft and really has his heart set on the Browns because they seem to be going in the right direction.

Mahomes is actually noted as the third or fourth best quarterback in the upcoming draft. Other top quarterbacks include DeShone Kizer and Trubisky Watson. Mahomes is looking forward to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis next week so that he can show his stuff. The Browns do have top pick, which Mahomes hope to be, and the twelfth position. Patrick Mahomes is named after his father who was a Major League pitcher. He hopes that his tenacity and work ethic will give him the edge.

Lance Zierlein commented on Mahomes’ NFL.com profile that Mahomes, who is 6 feet three inches and 215 pounds, has the ideal NFL body to work both inside and outside of the pocket. Zierlein also added that Mahomes’ accuracy has been improving since his freshman season, and he challenges defenders with confidence and increases velocity to make his passes move. Sources have told cleveland.com that two teams are considering makes trades to get Mahomes who had a strong 2016 record with 41 touchdowns, 5,052 yards, 10 interceptions and completed 66 percent of all passes.

Tyvis Powell Heading To The Browns

Tyvis Powell Senior Bowl

Tyvis Powell is a second year player from the Ohio State Buckeyes now in the NFL, but he will be heading back to his home state, Cleveland to play for the Browns. Powell, an undrafted free agent, was waived by the Seattle Seahawks just prior to the postseason. However, being without a team was temporary because shortly after, Powell who is from Bedford, was claimed by the Cleveland Browns off waivers.

The NFL draft of 2016 had some great moments; however, Powell who is a fan favorite of Ohio State sat and waited for his name to be called as each round went by. Powell who plays safety, did not show any remorse and regrouped. He took calls from other teams in the league.

Tyvis Powell then signed with the Seattle Seahawks in the Legion of Boom. In 2016, he did not get much time on the field, but as a Buckeye he was able to get some snaps on special teams. Powell played in eight games in which he gathered three special team tackles, despite being on the active roster for the season.

The Buckeye‘s fans will miss Powell who is heading to Seattle, which is his home state. He hopes to get a spot on this 53-person team.  September is a while away but Powell needs to get through the mini-camps and OTAs before he is considered for a spot on the final roster.

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Stays In Berea

Columbus no longer getting promised training camp as Browns back out of the deal.

A deal that would have seen the Cleveland Browns training camp relocated to Columbus in 2018 falls through as the Browns back out.

The deal would have included new football fields, and a new and bigger Tuttle Park rec center. On Wednesday, the Browns informed Franklin County and the city that they would not be moving forward.

According to a statement from the team’s spokesman, Peter John-Baptiste, the organization felt it was in everyone’s best interest to remain in Berea for the immediate future.

The turned down deal would have cost Franklin County and the Browns $5 million each with the city covering the estimated $15-17 million remaining.

According to a statement given by Columbus director of Recreation and Parks, Tony Collins, the goal of the project was to work with partners in a way that maximized programs for their residents and facilities, but they were unable to move forward with the project.

While the deal was still in its early stages earlier this month, it did appear to be on its way to coming to fruition. It is unclear what caused the Browns to walk away, but they did reaffirm their commitment to stay in Berea, a suburb of Cleveland.

This is the second deal this year to fall through that would see the Browns relocate outside of Cleveland.

Cleveland Browns Josh McCown Back In Practice

Browns QB Practices Despite Injury

Josh McCown started the season as Robert Griffin III‘s backup. He ended up starting game 2 on the season but suffered a broken collarbone in the first half of the game versus the rival Baltimore Ravens. He ended up finishing the game but has not appeared in a game for Cleveland since.

This week, the veteran QB returned to practice. He has his eyes set on the goal of winning back the starting spot at quarterback for the Browns. The Browns are 0-5 on the season so far.

So far this season, 5 different players have appeared at the quarterback position for the Browns. The original starter, Griffin, was injured in game 1. Then McCown started game 2. Since then rookie Cody Kessler, wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, and career journeyman Charlie Whitehurst have all appeared at the position for the Browns. It is important to note that Pryor was drafted out of college by the Raiders to play quarterback after starring at the position in college at Ohio State.

Kessler was injured in week 5 against the New England Patriots. It was originally thought that he had broken bones in his check, but X-rays revealed that to be not true. The quarterback situation this year is a perfect representation of the Browns situation at the position since the team’s inception in 1999.
